My orignial comment was more inkling toward heavy addiction. For instance, a casual smoker (if you can call any type of smoking casual... so let's call it a smoker who smokes no more than a couple of cigarretes a day as opposed to those who smoke entire packs) would still experience some sort of withdrawl, while a casual drinker will not.

Of course a person with a drinking problem will have withdrawl symptoms.

Most people dont think Cheese is addictive either :p

No... unless I've already had a lot of alcohol. Then yes.

I tried beer once. Tasted like sweaty gym socks. Don't ask me how I know what sweaty gym socks taste like.

In moderate amounts it doesn't kill brain cells.

If you drink way too much over a long time it does wear down the dendrites in the brain making messaging between cells harder.

Also since it acts on GABA it's one of the most addictive drugs out there and has among the worst withdrawal symptoms of any drug.

It's also carcinogenic, so too much increases the risk of cancer.

Just wanted to get the facts out. Personally I drink, but only until the point where I start to feel good and my social inhibitions loosens up. Then I'm satisfied for most of the evening. Any more is just overkill, and I mostly drink for the taste anyway. One quality beer like a stout or IPA beats many cheap lagers any day.

Surely this is only if you are an alcoholic? People definitely drink a lot around here, especially with all the social aspects related to drinking, but I've never felt that it was an addiction in the sense that people won't be able to stop when they wan to, or have withdrawal sympotoms of any sort.

(In Dutch society students are excempt from the definition of being an alcoholic, although on average they drink waaaaayy past the threshold! It's just too expected for us to get smashed.)

@ Bäsk conversation.

Oh yes. I've got to try it. :P Off to Stockholm next year, anyway!

Yes. And mostly when people have gotten to the point where they drink all day in order to feel normal. The thing about GABA is that it is the substance that slows down neuron firing in the brain. So when an alcoholic who is drunk all day runs out of alcohol, his brain's resistance to GABA can cause the brain neurons to fire uncontrollably leading to seizures that can casuse brain damage or death.

About Stockholm. When you get there, remember when you talk to people there that a stockholmer accent, to the rest of us swedes sounds like someone who has to take a shit really bad to the point where it starts to affect how he talks. Hope I didn't ruin your interactions with the locals too much, but as a gothenburger, it's my duty to inform people about this :)

Alcohol, all by itself, is technically poison and tastes terrible. That's why so many people brew it or distill it or what have you, to change the flavor and make it more drinkable. 100% alcohol is RUBBING alcohol, for Christ's sake!

As a 32 year old, I've had plenty of good and bad experiences. It can be fun, but just remember to be smart about it. It's easy to lose control without even realizing it. Also drinking can physically destroy parts of your body, primarily the liver, after only several years of abuse.

I enjoy a good beer from time to time. Blessed am I to live in Belgium ^^.

I tend to like some Cider brands but even then it's a slim few to choose from. For alcohol like Vodka I tend to have that with sprite or coke, sometimes I just go for the "bitch pops" versions. I haven't gotten wasted in a big way since I was 18-22, I;m generally not much of a guy who loves drinking alcohol, I'll drink at parties and some holidays but nothing outside of those.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Depends on the drink. I don't really have any opinions about alcohol itself. I like some alcoholic drinks but I don't some some others.
