In moderate amounts it doesn't kill brain cells.

If you drink way too much over a long time it does wear down the dendrites in the brain making messaging between cells harder.

Also since it acts on GABA it's one of the most addictive drugs out there and has among the worst withdrawal symptoms of any drug.

It's also carcinogenic, so too much increases the risk of cancer.

Just wanted to get the facts out. Personally I drink, but only until the point where I start to feel good and my social inhibitions loosens up. Then I'm satisfied for most of the evening. Any more is just overkill, and I mostly drink for the taste anyway. One quality beer like a stout or IPA beats many cheap lagers any day.

Surely this is only if you are an alcoholic? People definitely drink a lot around here, especially with all the social aspects related to drinking, but I've never felt that it was an addiction in the sense that people won't be able to stop when they wan to, or have withdrawal sympotoms of any sort.

(In Dutch society students are excempt from the definition of being an alcoholic, although on average they drink waaaaayy past the threshold! It's just too expected for us to get smashed.)

@ Bäsk conversation.

Oh yes. I've got to try it. :P Off to Stockholm next year, anyway!

Yes. And mostly when people have gotten to the point where they drink all day in order to feel normal. The thing about GABA is that it is the substance that slows down neuron firing in the brain. So when an alcoholic who is drunk all day runs out of alcohol, his brain's resistance to GABA can cause the brain neurons to fire uncontrollably leading to seizures that can casuse brain damage or death.

About Stockholm. When you get there, remember when you talk to people there that a stockholmer accent, to the rest of us swedes sounds like someone who has to take a shit really bad to the point where it starts to affect how he talks. Hope I didn't ruin your interactions with the locals too much, but as a gothenburger, it's my duty to inform people about this :)

I LOVE ICELAND!
