Forums - Gaming - The Witness Nearly Sold As Much In A Week As Braid Sold In A Year

The guy is an entrepreneur. If the witness failed he would have lost millions. Being that it is a good game he deserves the millions he'll make. Pirates are low life asshole that that have convinced themselves they are entitled to the work of others by being grammar nazis on the word "theft".

If you are a pirate and are reading this, you are a piece of shit.

Damn you're angry.

Well, I don't think it's ok to steal the game, just to make that clear. But the guy is just earning more money than he can spend anyway so I don't see the point in bitching about pirates. Ain't nothing he can do against it anyway. It's like Microsoft would be whining about stolen Windows copies. They don't do that, because there's just zero sense in it.

I would understand a dev that is close to bankruptcy complaining about stuff like that, even though in such a case, it wouldn't help either. But this right here us just a rich guy complaining about not getting even more money. It's just greed, nothing more. There's no higher moral battle which this guy is fighting. He just can't get enough, that's all. You don't see Toby Fox complaining about pirated games of Undertale and you know why? Because the game sells good enough.

it's not OK to try to get gamers to actually pay money for the game they play ? wtf am I reading?

It's not okay to deceive gamers. The message of his series of tweets was that future game development will be impacted if not more people buy his game, as if there was a risk that The Witness doesn't make back its money and a lot more.

Where is my follow up to fez?

if blow makes almost all his money on consoles who's to say his next game doesn't skip pc?

at the very least he has already said he won't release another drm-less game.

Sounds impactful regardless.

The money he makes isnt just for him though is it?

  • 1. Staff
  • 2. Debt if any for creating the current game
  • 3. Running costs until next game comes out (which if the team is large would be considerable)

Just because his game is making money now, first he has to pay his debt back to make the game, then continue to pay wages and then pay to make the next. You have no idea how rich he is... and why should it matter if he did have money, why should that prevent him from making money from his work? At what point do you say someone has more money and shouldnt get paid for working? So say person A has 40K in the bank, should his employer stop paying him because he has 40k in the bank?

You see the problem with what you are saying right? You are saying him making money from what hes worked hard on means he is just greedy to want to continue earning money from his job. No one in their right mind would want to work 40+ hrs a week (and in the game industry its usually more than that believe me) just because they already have some cash.

You are comparing a multi BILLION dollar company listed on the stock exchange with many other products to one guy who poured millions of his own money into a game for 7 years. Flawed argument right there, sorry.

But its a flawed argument anyway, even a Billion dollar company has the right to earn money from anything they create. The size or profitibility of a company should not exclude them from making money from products they create that people want. Ultimately if a billion dollar company does badly because everyone stole their games, the people at the bottom doing the crap jobs would be out of work first...

I'm not sure how you can pin it on greed. The game just launched, he didn't know how well it's going to sell. One failed game could lose him a lot of money and we don't know the knock on effect of this. Bigger studios have gone under so why shouldn't he worry.

Anyway he's already said that the media took what he said about piracy out of context.

Since there has been confusion about my stance on this topic, I'll explain it in more detail. I am not sticking up for pirates, not at all. Here's what Blow tweeted recently:

It seems The Witness is the #1 game on a certain popular torrent site.
Unfortunately this will not help us afford to make another game! :(

I'm glad that a lot more people will be experiencing the game! But I also want to be able to make another comparable game next! Just sayin'.

That's portraying the situation as if there was a serious risk at that point in time. But now we get that tweet about The Witness selling more copies in a week than Braid did in a year, and The Witness's price tag is four times as high as Braid's (correct me if I am wrong, but I think Braid was $10).

Portraying the situation in such a way is an attempt (intentional or not) to take advantage of the goodwill of gamers. There are many people who weren't going to pay $40 for The Witness because it's just too expensive for their tastes; they were waiting for a significant price drop. But because of the above tweets, they might decide to "take one for the team" and spend $40 on The Witness.

Yep, Blow decided to deceive people by making out it was getting pirated so they will go and buy it to only scupper his own plans by telling everybody it's selling well /s

When he made that tweet he more than likely didn't know how well it was selling so what's your point. Either way nothing should justify pirating.

I don't have a problem with the guy earning money. The only thing that bugs me is that he is still complaining about not getting enough.
