Forums - Gaming Discussion - Virtual Reality, the next gimmick of gaming?

When reading these general VR discussion threads I often feel like some people read all the "you have to experience it to know it", "it really is different" and all the explanations of what it is, how it tricks the brain, what the result is and how we are very close technically to finally pull it off and it just doesn't really register at all. Oh well, seeing, and in this case, moving and feeling is believing.

I feel like it will be huge like the Wiimote was or the DS touchpad or even the kinect. But then after a few years people will be done with it. Just like they are with the wiimote, Touch screen, and kinect.

Thoughts?

Normally I would have agree but the reactions from people using this is compeltely different then what it was when people used the wiimote. One guy who used the latest oculus was saying that it was so real looking that it was just scary.

to be honest i'm completely torn between:
1. flop
2. fad (aka gimmick)
3. innovation

i just don't know what to make of it. i hear such amazing things coming from the people who have actually used it but all i can see right now is the inconvenience, high costs, and my prejudice of thinking it looks stupid to wear that.

I never understood that part at all. I mean, who will be watching? Is it just you knowing that you look stupid (for whatever reason one would think that), even if there isn't anyone to see?

It's not really innovation. It has been tried before and it was known more or less what it will take to have it. Since Palmer figured it out that you can use the screens of phones to do it (you could call that inovation), and get everyone excited about it again, there has been a lot of fresh research and now we know even more what it will take to do it well. Nothing is really new with it. The head mounted display, the body tracking, the pover glove feedback thing, fans to simulate wind, 3d suround sound has been around for ages...

The innovation will be in the content, games in our case, as that is waht we are interested in.

Porn industry is already embracing it.

People might see this as sort of a joke but the size and influence of the porn industry is often overlooked (for obvious reasons)

People who see it as a "joke" don't know Tech history then...  Super 8, VHS, Blu-Ray and the Internet ...  all help be pioneered because of porn..

yes,..  a lot of it is just knowing.  and some fear of getting punched in the face and not seeing it come because i'm in my VR.

the content requires the hardware so you cannot (imo) call the content innovative but dismiss the hardware as not.  innovation really means a new idea, method, or process that as a concequence of breaks into the market or society.  a key part of innovation isn't just having an idea but having a significant impact on the market or society.

exactly. Not to mention innovations in online video streaming

The price will be too high and the software output will be barebones.

Its coming too early. Should be a Gen 9 launch thing, or even Gen 10.

Please spurge, dont be silly. Vr is a life changer device, the true step forward in video games. Of course, If it was made by nintendo, it would be just a gimmick.

LOL

I don't believe it will be more than a whimper.
