Forums - Gaming Discussion - Virtual Reality, the next gimmick of gaming?

It all depends on the price. like if ps VR launches at 399 it will have to come down to 199 after 2 years max. Otherwise it won't be a widespread gimmick like the Wii motion controls.

will it still be a fad when you cant distinquish a virtual reality from reality?

If we're talking strictly for video games only, then it depends on the support it gets and the right price.

But overall, VR is likely here to stay as there'll be other functions and applications for it outside of video games giving another form of entertainment.

VR is here to stay. Porno industry is already embracing it. PS4 has one coming. PC has several options. If you tried a good setup you will be blown away. Just give it a year or two and prices will be much more palatable. Elite Dangerous in VR is absolutely stunning and will instantly convert you to a believer.

to be honest i'm completely torn between:
1. flop
2. fad (aka gimmick)
3. innovation

i just don't know what to make of it. i hear such amazing things coming from the people who have actually used it but all i can see right now is the inconvenience, high costs, and my prejudice of thinking it looks stupid to wear that.

People might see this as sort of a joke but the size and influence of the porn industry is often overlooked (for obvious reasons)

Unlike most people i think VR will attract core and harcore gamers and not casuals like the Wiimote.

VR does not offer a new way of playing games it's just improve the game immersion.Hardcore gamers don't mind to buy a new consoles just because of the graphics improvement so they will don't mind to buy a VR headset.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Is it a gimmick? Yes. Always has been. Will it become a "big deal"? No, I really don't think so.

Hell, even "3D" gaming hasn't really been a "big deal", even though "3D" TVs and the 3DS are successful, the TVs are hardly the highest selling models, and I honestly think the 3DS (especially a this point) is the success it is in spite of the 3D gimmick, not because of it. Thank god for that slider/off switch.

have you actually watch any VR videos?  the gameplay in VR can so clearly be different than anything that can be done with a traditional controllers or even a wii-mote.  VR is probably the most gameplay changing event since the transition from 2D to 3D graphics and clearly leauges above the wiimote.  ...and i'm by no means a VR champion but i'm also not going critize the technology with blinders on only seeing the negatives completely dismissing the positives.  the new gameplay possibilites is the biggest positive VR has.
