I gotta agree with bdbdbd here that Wii U was a retread of the Gamecube, not the Wii, hence the similar sales.

The Wii was a forward thinking console; Wii U, like Gamecube, was a backwards thinking console, applying a 90s mindset to a 21st century market.

if this was really true why are the other two consoles doing SO much better? Hell even the PS360 didnt do to bad in the end. They both ended selling more than most Ninty consoles do period.

What do other consoles have to do with it?

the other consoles are more run of the mil and they are doing fine. So why does it take Ninty to be "forward thinking" to have to not flop? (i personally believe they were NOT forward thinking, they just id something different that worked)

We should look at what works for Nintendo and not just contrast with MS and Sony because Nintendo can't and shouldn't just emulate them.

Last gen Nintendo did come out on top in terms of console sales when it was Nintendo's Wii vs Sony's PS3 vs Microsoft's X360.

But looking at the past console cycles and comparing them to more current cycles doesn't really help though because of changing markets.

If you did you could also say that most Nintendo consoles sold better than the original Xbox, but what does that matter?

Nintendo should look at their contemporary competitors (ie XBone, PS4) and the NX should be something that would be a compelling option to consumers.

That means learning from the mistakes of the Wii U and making all the necessary changes while also giving people a real reason to choose their console.

fair points but that doesnt really answer my question

Sony targets the same market they did in 1995 as well........

No. PS1 wasn't primarily driven by cinematic M-rated blockbusters the way PS4 is. They skew older now because the audience is older.

Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Driver, Tekken, Gran Turismo, Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal, Grand Theft Auto, Star Wars, Dino Crisis, Medal of Honor, Need for Speed, WWF, 007, Tony Hawk, Madden, FIFA, Ridge Racer, Knockout Kings, Silent Hill.

Ya ur right, Playstation & Playstation 4 totally were aimed at completely different demographics.

You forgot Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, Spyro the Dragon, Croc. You know, family friendly cartoon mascots that were front and centre on PS1 but relegated to the back seat or just plain abandoned on PS4, cos they don't appeal to today's gamers they way they did to the kids of the 90s.

Knack, Tearaway, LittleBigPlanet, Dreams........Sony in 1995 isn't all that different from Sony in 2015.

None of those games were given anywhere near the prominence that 90s Sony gave Crash or Spyro.

Knack was one of two 1st party launch titles, LittleBigPlanet 3 was the only 1st party holiday title in 2014, Ratchet & Clank is releasing this Spring with a THEATRICAL MOVIE to go along with it. Plus there is also Skylanders, Minecraft, Disney Infinity, various Lego titles.

Ur trying so hard to not admit ur wrong. Playstation in 1995 & Playstation in 2015 are very similar in almost every aspect.

No, they are not. PS4 skews considerably older than PS1. Back in the 90s, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro were front and centre. Now it's Uncharted and The Last of Us.

what he is trying to say is that those titles you mentioned arent even close to the relevance as the ones in 95 and they dont get the push now that those ones in 95 got either. Knack flopped, LBP3 flopped. R&C sales dont do original Crash Bandicoot numbers. Skylanders dont do that much at least no on Sony systems. same with Disney Infinity. Lego does well but even then that is more of the license side doign the work (the actual original Lego title doesnt do near as well, looking at you Lego City stories) Minecraft is the only one really killing. Hell Sony themselves push Uncharted series now like they pushed Crash back in the day, two very different genres.

Sony markets to older teenagers and adults primarily. That hasn't really change that much from 1995 to 2015 ... I would say they market maybe a little moreso towards mid-late 20 somethings (even early 30 somethings it appears) now though ...

The crux of Sony's philosophy is that you target adults/older teens *first*, then you work your way down to kids. And because kids are obsessed with being adults, they naturally gravitate to the platform too.

It's hard to argue their philosophy doesn't have very consistent, strong results with home consoles.

Nintendo's model of being the family company with an eye for "kids first" is a much tougher sell and in many ways has been problematic since the mid-90s onwards when Sega first challenged them and started introducing marketing for a different audience other than kids for the first time with the Genesis.

So ur just going to go back to ignoring the list of teenage/adult aimed games from a few posts back?

Sony of 1995 doesn't need to change much though that's the issue ... I mean they've adjusted their marketing over the years for sure to bit more sophisticated appeal a bit more to 20-30 somethings but it's still fairly consistent.

Nintendo still being stuck in the 80s is considerably worse for them.

Overall, Playstation & Playstation 4 are aimed at primarily the same demographics in terms of marketing & types of games. That's the whole point, he's the one that keeps trying to deflect the conversation from its original point.
