 Are you seriously expecting the ps4 to drop like a rock in 2016 because "everyone who wanted one" already has it, like you said.  What's the logic behind that conclusion.

Comparing to the 3ds doesn't make any sense for obvious reasons

I never said drop like a rock so stop making things up. I said that 2015 could be it's peak year. That means even if it sells 17.3million this year (which is still insane) it would still be less than 2015. You childish fanboys really lose the plot sometimes.

Since you were already making things up with the "everyone who wanted a ps4 already got one" I thought it was ok to guess myself :^)

I'm sorry that you were banned for not being able to discuss without insults (I didn't even report), Shame on you

The PlayStation 4 sold through 5.7 million units during the holiday period (Nov 23rd 2015 - Jan 3rd 2016)

Here is some comparison data

PlayStation 3 in same time frame (2008) sold through 2.2 million during this same period.
PlayStation 3 in 2009 sold through 3.8 million during this period.

PlayStation 2 in 2001 sold through 5.3 million during this period.

Do you know what the ps2 did this period in 2002?

It did 8.5 million units. But this number includes the full month of November. So November 1st to January 1st for example. Where as all the numbers above are from November 23rd to jan 1st.

Thanks for the information as well as the full explanation.

while it's easy to see it's doing better than the ps3.

The data for the ps2 comparison it's less clear. A difference of 2.8 million and a difference of 3 weeks. That leaves it pretty close either way.

Hmmmm...... alright, have a look at this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2664337.stm

34 months after the launch of the PS2 in Japan (March 2000-January 2003), the system had reached 50 million. The PS4 has been on the market for 26 months (on Jan 15). So, it would need to sell 14 million units by September. Can it do it? Anyone?

Bets on that wasn't sold through but if it isn't nope not a chance at all.

Great. Turns out VGC tracking isn't far off or undertracking.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I can actually give you a better reference. In 2001 the PS2 sold 5.3 million between Nov 23rd and Jan 1st (or whatever the Jan date was then lol) and for November and December combined it sold 6.9 million. So the difference was 1.6m extra during that 3 week period in 2001. Or to put it another way 23% of sales came from those 3 weeks and 77% was from the holiday period in 2001.

But of course we can't apply these exact percentages to 2002 and 2015.

gotta give vgchartz credit on this one, it's not easy. I do often criticize the numbers when they are wrong but this is pretty good.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

As they say in GFaqs, to 50M!

Thanks, well that does make it easier. Unless the percentage of the total sales for those 3 weeks hit 33% or more in 2002 the ps2 did better then than the ps4 now.

So 17.7 million for the calendar year, very impressive indeed. Console's usually peak in their second year so 2015 is as good as its going to get in regards to ps4 sales.

One has to wonder why this wasn't called bogus. Consoles normally peak in their 2nd year? False. On top of that, a PlayStation won't peak before dropping to $299.99 (going by historic data). So, this should prove to be far off.

Exactly,  I was going to reply to that myth but you have answered it .

As a matter of fact according to thvgc's data base the PS2's peak year was it's 3rd with 22million and the 4th was it's second best with 20million.

Sorry CGI , I didn't see your detailed list , still it shows that the 3rd year was the peak and with  better info regarding asian sales ,  the numbers move from vgc's 22m to 23.7 m with year 4 pretty much spot on with the data base.

Saleswise I think this gen will end a lot like gen 5

PS4 = PS1
Xbone = N64
WiiU = Saturn

PS4 should be a little over PS1 and xbone should be a little over 64 too. Wii U under Saturn.

Yep ,wii u will start by now, having negative sales, as a result falling below saturns 9.26m LT sales (at least this is the allegedly last official figure, there is a intense controversy about how much did it sold, eventually)...
