Forums - Politics - Virginia School District closes over Islam worksheet

Would you get angry if your child received this?

Yes! It is making my child submit to Islam! 77 42.78%

No, it is simply teaching... 62 34.44%

Who cares? Honestly. No need to be butthurt. 41 22.78%

Total:180

Honestly, OP, if you think it's bad in America, go check out Europe right now; particularly France and Hungary. They make what's happening here look like child's play.

O/T: Definite overreaction, but at the same time...what exactly was the teacher expecting? You couldn't possibly have picked a worse sentence for them to copy down, especially with how sensitive of an issue Islam's supposed attempt to take over the west has become.

Many smallish communities do not like any different kind of thinking or any challenges to their assumption that 'everyone does things the way I do, cause that's all the people I know.'

I bet they would have an even bigger reaction if they taught about atheism. Over 15% of the world is atheist and extremely neglected in the political and cultural scenes.

I understand ignorance - not knowing about other ways people live because you haven't been exposed to it, is understandable. But the hostility and rage about other people believing something different is unreasonable.

And I agree, many Christans are trying to turn the USA into a Christian Nation and forget that's one of reasons for the revolution against England in 1776.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

I understand people not wanting to write the sentence that makes people muslim. That's perfectly fine. The only thing that was extremely incorrect was the way parents reacted. Seriously, a simple request or note with the homework would have been smart. Yelling and screaming won't do anything. Yes, it was weird for the teachers to pick this in general, but the parents should really be ashamed of themselves for their childish behaviour.

Christianity has a better chance of taking over America ;)

I'm being completely honest. ISIS doesn't stand a chance against America. The only true enemy America faces is itself. The people within America are so divided to the point that it feels like the Civil War. Democrat, Republic, Leftist, Right, liberal, conservative-all of these labels are just making Americans slowly become more and more untolerant of each other.

If the parents felt very uncomfortable with this, why would they go ahead and flip? A note saying "I don't want my child to do this" was all that was needed. They are acting as though Christians are 1% of the population and are getting persecuted to extinction...

I feel bad for the teachers though. They have to deal with horrible and childish parents because of a small mistake they probably overlook.

ISIS stands no chance of defeating America in a full scale war, but to say that this keeps them from being a "true" enemy is a bit shallow, I'd argue. If you're saying that the only thing that could cause America to collapse is itself, that I'd agree on, but I'd say that has less to do with Americans becoming less tolerant of each other and the slow decay of our political system.

As for why parents would go ahead and flip out, the best answer I can offer is that humans are irrational creatures are best, and we are quick to be afraid of anything different than us, especially when we consider ourselves in danger. I think you're placing this burden far too much on Christians; this is a human reaction, and if you want proof of that look no further than the National Front in France. People are already on edge with all that they've heard about Islam, terrorism, and ISIS's recruiting in the US, and they're going to react irrationally to anything that they feel might pose any semblance of a threat to something they care so much for (their children). This same sort of thing is happening all across Europe, only with far more violence, due to the huge influx of refugees.

In the end, I agree, it's a irrational response, but this is just beyond poor planning by the teacher. Yeah, the parents should have handled it far better than they did, but you've got to be more careful with your lesson planning, especially in a political climate like ours.

There's stupidity and then there's this... >_>

Can't argue against that. Horribly thought out lesson. Though, look at how easy it was to change it from religious text to non-religious text.

I'd love to tout that in my country things are better, but sadly they are not.
I remember being excited about religion lessons in school as a kid, being eager to learn about Shintoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and the Islam.
I expected at least the major practised religions to be present and would have appreciated if they had tought us about the dead ones like ancient greek and rome religions as well as the viking and egyptian gods as well (there's also the Maya and other native American religions, but I'm not sure how much we know about those in detail).

It turned out, that all we did was learn some (to me at least) obscure Bible lessons that i don't remember much at all about and being bored out of my mind because it was all so christianity centric.
This is not something that should be tought at a state school in a secular country. It should be about learning as much about as many religions as possible. Comparing and contrasting and analyzing what draws people to certain religions (in certain time contexts) and away from others. In this context it can also be very beneficial to disscuss atheism and forced atheism as well.

This christianity centric approach to religion education in public schools has to stop, it has no place there. Christianity should be one religion among many we learn about in school.

It's honestly disappointing the way the parents reacted. While it wasn't smart for the teachers to make students write that(since Americans are sensitive to the topic), the outrage the parents made was blown out of proportion.

A christian mom said her daughter was being forced to Islam. I mean, really? Is everything people do nowadays racist, sexist, or offensive?

I honestly don't know how you can teach atheism.

"Ok class, today we're going to learn about atheism.  Some people do not believe that any gods exist.  And ummmmmmm.... huh... I guess that's it..."

Long weekend for all of the students. YAY!!! .
