Forums - Nintendo - Forbes: Wii U-Only Zelda Game Would be a Mistake

it all depends on how good the game is going to sell, which is of course is uncertain, sure thing is that quality won't be affected - they've already done it with the Twilight Princess masterpiece

if we assume sales close to Skyward Sword as a WiiU exclusive, which is fine for a low-install base system, then keeping it on WiiU is wiser, taking into account investors and loyal customers that trust Nintendo as a company

now if the franchise is to suffer with much lower sales, then maybe WiiU and NX would be better

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Aonuma said they finished MM in one year not two years.

SS has took so long because of implication of Motion Controls. Zelda U is first HD, true open biggest world Zelda game. Also Nintendo will now have single platform for developing games, not like before 2 completely different.

Still only possible cos it was made in an era where games took vastly less time and resources than they do today. 2 years for a next gen Zelda is impossible, especially for a team infamous for their delays.

Agree, and thats why I said 2-3 years, not just one year like MM. And not impossible, ok they say NX Zelda will come in two years after Zelda U, and they delayed it for one year (very likely :)), thats 3 years, again time frame that I mentioned, 2-3 years.

Also its not just pulling MM with NX Zelda, its also that Nintendo will not have 2 completely different platforms like before, with NX they will have just one platform, so they will not make 2 difrent Zelda games in same time like this gen ALBW and Zelda U, or difrent remakes and ports for handheld and seperate for home console.

Wow... even Forbes people are disinformed. What if... the NX isnt a replacement for the Wii U? Nintendo never said it would be.

The NX, as a home console will NEVER be sucessful. Nintendo would be insane to replace the Wii U without delighting customers first. Also, what about the 3DS? That is older and needs replacing.
Also, Nintendo just got to grips with HD development and therefore they already jumped another generation.

I dont even know what to say. Its collective lunacy going on.

You guys will never be "delighted" with the Wii U if you're not with what it already has.

Skyward Sword + Xenoblade + others late in the Wii cycle and many Nintendo fans here still call the late gen Wii cycle crap. Same thing for the GameCube. N64 was pretty weak later on too.

This is just par for the course ... Nintendo fans are never happy unless Nintendo is giving them like 80-90% of what they want. And the Wii U realistically can't have that type of commitment from Nintendo going forward.

It's legacy will be as a market failure that had a handful of good games, that's just all there is to it. Nothing is changning that now.

Sometimes Nintendo has to play the role of the "unpopular parent". A kid may cry about having to go to sleep early on a school day or not being able to eat candy for dinner ... but you as a parent can't give them everything they want. That's just all there is to it. Nintendo needs to be concerned with the overall future of the company because if NX is not successful, and successful right out of the gate at that, it's quite likely the next Zelda game you'll be playing will be on a Sony or Microsoft console and then you'll be chiding Nintendo for being so stupid as to focus on the Wii U, thus causing the NX to have to come out later than it should have or not having important IP like a new Zelda or AC available for it early in its product cycle.

Animal Crossing should not be on the Wii U. Zelda should be a launch title for the NX with the Wii U getting a release, most ideally *after* the NX launch, just like Twilight Princess. I know people don't want to hear it, but it's from a business POV the right call. Sometimes you have to be the unpopular parent. Nintendo fans will get over it, they got over Twilight Princess and the GameCube's terrible 2005 and non-existant 2006.

"you guys"... not sure what you are refering to but ok.

If the NX is simply another home console more powerful than the Wii U, it will fail. It has no chance whatsoever. That is completely independant of what i think and what you think about some games available at launch.

We have had many examples that it doesnt matter. The Dreamcast had an incredible line-up, didnt make a difference. The Wii had a crap line-up, didnt make a difference. There is more than titles that decide the fate of a console. Its the perception of the consumer. Coming from the Wii U, Nintendo doesnt have a good perception. If this is really a new system, they have killed the Wii U about as early as SEGA killed the Saturn. What garantee will cosnumers have that they won't do it yet again once they aren't pleased with NX sales? Its the same exact thing that killed the Dreamcast.

Therefore i dont think a new home console has any chance whatsoever. It's either something aimed at the casual gamers or something that is more aimed at the portable market. To simply make a new home console without anything that sets it apart is suicide.

Genesis released 3 years after Master System

Nintendo DS released 3.5 years after Gameboy Advance

Xbox 360 released 4 years after Xbox

All 3 of these went on to sell much more than their predecessors

Saturn released about 6 years after Genesis

PS3 released 6 years after PS2

3DS released over 6 years after DS

All 3 of these sold much worse than their predecessors

The life cycle of a console has no bearing on the success of its successor.

You didnt understand what i said. I said consumer perception is what matters. The number of years are not necessarely the defining factor.

He posted evidence that contradicted the premise of your argument, six examples. So your argument is thoroughly refuted.

Yes, I completely understand what u said, that Wii U getting a successor after 4 years will hurt consumer confidence and I used 3 examples of devices that got successors in similar time frames and it went well for the company and I gave 3 examples of devices with much longer cycles and the the result was the opposite.

Releasing a successor earlier than normal does not guarantee failure.

2 years for a AAA next gen title from a studio notorious for dragging its feet is about as likely as a diamond meteorite landing in your backyard.
