Forums - Music Discussion - Pre 21st century music VS 21st century music

What century of Music do you think is better?

20th century music 42 85.71%

21st century music 7 14.29%

Total:49

I'm sure it's obvious that Music has changed quite a lot during the past few years. We used to have people such as 2pac, Michael Jackson, Elton John, and so forth.

Nowdays, famous musicians are Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, Iggy, Eminem, and so forth.

I'm curious; do you prefer music of this century, of the previous century? I know for sure that I'm placing my money on the previous generation, and for good reasons. Nowadays so many songs are sexual, obnoxious, and about dirty love(and whatnot). I prefer the times where music videos didn't need a bunch of fantasized women, sexual references, and a bunch of swearing just to be popular. Most music nowadays is meaningless anyways.

If you compare rappers as well, the most influential rapper last century was 2pac. Look at his raps. He actually rapped about important things. Nowadays "rappers" are trash. Perhaps eminem doesn't deserve hate, but even he doesn't rap about things 2pac did all the time.

For the rest of the genres, music is more like porn nowadays. A song can barely get attention if it doesn't have anything sexual in it.

Thoughts?

Pre 21st century music includes thousands of years of music.

I mean Eminem is a great 21st century musician, but I dunno if he can compare with pre 21st century musicians like Bach, Mozart or Beethoven. Though competition.

Also Elton John hasn't gone anywhere, lol.

Pretty much. I will say music hasn't "changed" much in the last 15 years or so though... it's still primarily dominated by the same pop and hip pop stuff that's been dominating the TV and radio airwaves since the turn of the century, only with different faces attached to the music. First it was Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, now it's any number of dozens of cookie cutter pop singers. Back in the early 2000s you had Eminem and 50 Cent dominating the rap landscape, and now I don't even know what you'd consider to be actual rap because it all sounds like the same autotuned garbage and every "artist" is indistinguishable from the next.

And of course throughout all of this, rock music has been put on the back burner with the occasional angsty emo pop punk / metalcore band breaking through to the mainstream every once in awhile. There's been some good music out there over the last 15 years but it's been few and far between and you gotta actually go out and look for it, because we all know it's not getting played on the radio or during commercials anytime soon lol.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Every year I think mainstream music surely can't get worse, and then it does. I'd like to believe it will change at some point, but at the moment it is hard to see where the dumbing down, autotuning, everything-sounds-like-it-is-made-to-be-played-in-a-club crap that currently dominates is going to end.

There are probably some really good artists at the moment that you will never hear of unless you go searching for them though.

Pre. Nothing made now is memorable. Or really used in movies/shows.

pre by a longshot, like Archer said, not much 21st music as as memorable as pre 21st music. I prefer Mozart and the other music from the span of a thousand years than listening to hip hop/rap.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

Regardless of genre music IS getting worse all around.

In my childhood and growing up I loved all kinds of genres. Rock, metal, alternative, industrial, techno, rap, trance you name it. All the stuff I have heard in those genres in recent years is abysmal. And the ''non'' mainstream stuff is just as bad.

I completely agree with your last statement though. I am sure there are plenty of artists I don't know about, but its far too much effort having to find them. Spotify and the like is certainly no help.

SPC700 ftw.

Wait this isn't about video game music?

I've never liked commercial music, so from my view it was bad then and it's bad now.
