Forums - Gaming - Remember PS3 being compared to super computers?

I remember when they first announced the specs for PS3, the entire tech world had theirs jaws dropped, they were promesing near super computer perfomance in our living room. It was like a super computer could deliver 2 tflops and ps3 delivered 1.2 tflops. Remember that even many research labs instead of buying dedicated computers for their research they bought some PS3s and made it work so they had enough processing power.

PS3 CPU was insanely strong. I think it is even stronger than the PS4 and Xbox One CPU.

It's still useful.
It's being used to research black holes.

What's with all these people strapping consoles together? Does that actually work?

Turns out duct-tape is capable of carrying information faster than fiberwire.
This whole time we've been focused on the ps3s and the cell, and we never stopped to think at how amazing the duct-tape was.
poor duct-tape.

Well the Cell actually has been/is used in quite a few super computers

I think it`s a shame Sony ditched Cell, but they had to, x86 is a far more developer friendly architecture. It looks like it will take decades, if ever, for this kind of power to be reached in x86. If PS3 just was a major hit, developers would have no option but to learn how to live with it. If ps3 was a 150 million seller system and let x360 and wii to shame they could do anything they wanted and the developers would have to adapt or die.

Wait till the learn how to unleash the true power of PS3 *dies of old age*

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

PS3 in 2006 was a super computer and even the military bought up like 30 and hooked them all up together to run some military software. It had highly customized hardware like the XRAM among a nice customized CPU etc

While it may not be able to push the pretty pixels of PS4, PS3 and Cell are still some of the most powerful processors available to consumers. Cell still has that potential to do great stuff, but on a larger scale than gaming (i.e. space launches etc.)

If the PS1 CPU could power New Horizons, I can only imagine what Cell would be capable of.

Based on the Wii's sales, yes.
