Forums - Sales Discussion - Why did the Xbox outsell the GameCube?

Just like everyone else said, Halo.

Around the Network

The Xbox was sold as the most powerful console on the market to play third party games. Halo made it a staple, but it was mostly being the best console to play multiplat versions of third party.

Halo was probably the last killer ap launch title ever released and it deserved its success. The Gamecube's launch was poor. Everyone wanted Super Mario 3D GCN but instead we got Luigi's Mansion. That coupled with aggressive marketing(especially in the US), superior hardware, more multiplats, the Gamecube's kiddy design and mostly lack of mature content are only some of the reasons why the OG xbox outsold the GCN.

Well I wouldn't say it was the best console to play multiplat third party games. It was marginally..heck only a sliver better than GC with the graphics. You really couldn't tell the difference between them. We we do know is that they both were graphically better than the PS2. That was apparent.

This.

People say Xbox wouldn't have sold as well without Halo. But Gamecube wouldn't have done as well without Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.

Bottom line, Xbox did a better job at appealing to core audience even while it was dominated by Sony.

HALO
was too massive

Jonathan

Well it was something new aswell and differant, and Nintendo helped kill NGC sales by releasing luigi's mansion and cell shaded zelda.

Burnout looked awesome on Xbox compared to ps2, besides the softmods and hacking scene that surrounded the Xbox made it a good machine to playing usually the nicer version of multiplats and, if you were so inclined, for free.

Oh and it had a dashboard with more than just super basic functionality

Better online, better 3rd party support, better 3rd party exclusives (DOA 3, DOA Beach Volleyball, Shenmue 2, Crazy Taxi 3, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden Black, Jet Set Radio Future, etc). Plus a better overall library of games that appealed more to the US.

Halo and xbox live.
