Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U basically averages two "big" games a year.

Ok here's why I hate this thread (please mods not trying to be dick just hear, genuinely not trying to offend anyone) here's why: essentially it just riles all us Nintendo fans (both defenders and those displeased with their current direction) and argue about something abstract enough that we all see it differently. It is clear none of us are measuring what being big game is the same... well whatever I am sure some of you are having fun... lol I am a stick in the mud.

Check the link below. (note to Admins: it's not really porn please don't ban me!)

If you basically look at the two biggest games of the year and define those as big games, then it has 2 big games a year - by definition.

It's easy to forget all the third party titles that launch on the Wii U, Dance Party, the various Lego stuff, How to Train Your Dragon, etc. because who cares.

Personally I bought exactly - Super Mario 3d World, Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, and Splatoon.

I even skipped Smash Brothers...but I'm wavering, maybe I'll buy Smash....if I get bored. I will buy Yoshi's when it comes out.

Even with that short selection, I regret Mario Party 10 - I'd rather play Mario Party 8 frankly.

pretty much. Cant be too hard on them. That is better 1st party production the their competition. The issue is 3rd parties are now king.

Sony gets this- They use their exclusive games to fill out holes in the release schedule throughout the year.
MS kinda gets this- They ensure every major game does not become a Sony exclusive, but they have not caught on it might not be as beneficial to launch all of the 1st party games against the AAA 3rd party games. Launching Halo and TR against Star Wars, CoD, Fallout 4, AC, and other seems like wasting the potential of their exclusive lineup.

Well yes, I definitely would not call one game "bigger" than another game that had cost more to make, simply because its marketing budget was larger.

I'm also assuming you then mean that those are the only big games yet to come out this year, as the marketing budget for Splatoon appears to also have been quite meaty.

Splatoons marketing was very extravagant, on the level of mario kart. But I hesitate to call splatoon "big" since that would assume it's development budget is on par to mario kart's (I highly doubt that). Splatoon is a tough call since it is a budget game with a big marketing budget, but I am leaning toward it not being 'big'

And while you may not agree, I would say marketing budget is a very an important factor in deciding if a game is big (not big enough to outweigh the low development budget for splatoon). Marketing budget allows for games like hearthstone to be bigger than games like dishonored, despite the development budget difference

Splatoon still more than likely cost more to plan, produce, test, market, and maintain than Mario Maker.

Concept design and visual design from scratch, oodles of prototyping, balancing, online testing, so on so forth.

Again though, this is pure conjecture.

It's big in name alone and that's it. It's budget doesn't seem big, the graphics are awful, the gameplay doesn't seem new, etc. People just like to call it a big game to add it to the list of 'big' wii u games

Bullshit

Star Fox is big because the last real Star Fox sold 4 milions and it was universally praised as one of the best action games ever made, to say that the game is not big because the graphics is absurd, and to say that is not big because it plays similar is just stupid, the vast majority of big games this days does nothing new at all.  And if games with not extremely big budgets are not big, then I guess New Super Mario Bros is not big at all despite having sold more than 70 milions of copies with only 4 non-multiplatform games.

If the game is that big, why is this developed by a small team in only a year?

Only in a year like... Majora´s Mask?

And you talk about the small team that did Bayonetta 2, Vanquis, Metal Gear Rising, etc?

...

...

...

Yeah, it could be big.

Yeah, it can be called big.

Do you compare to Majora's Mask? A game planned as DLC that reuses a lot of assets from Ocarina of Time and that is shorter?

Wow, so that's why Star Fox looks that bad. It's just DLC sold as a game.

I'm not the one comparing games with different situations. I'm not the one desperate enough to defend the evident.

Oh and is also evident that Star Fox could be a million seller in 2 months and you would still calling it a little game just because. Is like pokemon, they are not very expensive so I guess all Pokemons are small games even selling +10 or +20 milions. Of course.
