Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U basically averages two "big" games a year.

How are you defining big games? And do the titles need to be Nintendo made? Because your numbers are way off just by looking at a release list. Do 3rd party games from big franchises count? Can a big title be a rerelease? Is your definition sales based? You missed a ton a of titles.

Pikmin isn't really a big game, but that's all 2013 had for the first half of the year, lol.

It's basically 1 major game for the first 6 months, then 1 major game for the second 6 months flanked by 2-3 decent titles.

So it's not about sales but intrinsic quality?  Then that makes your argument weaker.  Last year had Mario Kart 8, Tropical Freeze, Smash, Bayonetta 2, and Hyrule Warriors flanked with supporting titles.  This year has Mario Maker, Splatoon, Yoshi, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Fatal Frame V, Star Fox, and in Japan Genei Ibunroku #FE.  Depending on standards, Mario Party 10 can even go in there.

I'd say

Splatoon
Mario Maker

Are major titles this year

Star Fox
Xenoblade
Yoshi

Are your support titles.

Mario Party, Kirby, Fatal Frame and the like are more minor releases.

The fall seasons for the Wii U are OK, but the Jan-July period has been pretty brutal every year.

Did you just call starfox and Xenoblade support titles? I'm calling bull $#!+ on that. Starfox is big title and xenoblade is a giant jrpg. Yohsi is too big of a franchise to be considered support.

I dont think nintendo shares your idea of that pattern xD they know they need a blockbuster title, but thats the thing they want all their titles to be big blockbusters in a way or another, they just wanna sell consoles and software.

I think the point of the OP is that Nintendo is struggling to put out a large number of "big" releases, it's not necessarily about the exact number.

To pick up the point Soundwave made in his last post: I wonder if Nintendo can develop more games for NX than they did for Wii U. I think the current shortage of first party software was caused by a combination of shifting resources to 3DS back in 2011 when that console didn't sell, their internal restructuring and problems with HD development. Maybe things will get better on NX if they enlarge their workforce and have a console that is easy to develop for and not too powerful (and more experience with HD development of course). It should be a wise decision to keep the console's power within reasonable limits, otherwise their resources would be spread even thinner.

I wonder how many in-house first party titles Nintendo released for Gamecube and Wii as a reference point. Does anyone have any numbers?

What about call if duty, watchdogs and assassins creed? Are they not big titles? What do you define as big, system sellers, software sales or just what is big in your opinion?

But if you look at sales numbers and mass market appeal it actually makes sense. Starfox, Xenoblade and Yoshi will all sell in the 1-2 million units range, while Splatoon and Mario Maker will sell more than that. They'll also get more of a marketing push.

So your contention is essentially based entirely on a subjective and arbitrary judgement of what constitutes a "big" release?

This is a silly thread. :p

Nintendo is going to push Starfox (they already were at E3) if anything I only worry they will over estimate starfox and push it less. But otherwise Nintendo clearly consider starfox big. And Japan is raving about xenoblade.
