Forums - Gaming - PS4 pricecut and Slim version predictions

So today Sony announced a US$ 399, EU€ 399 1TB PS4 edition. Also announced a lighter and less power consuming PS4 model CUH-1200.

I initially predicted a price cut to $299 this year, but after seeing these developments, I'm gonna revise my prediction to $349 for the cheapest model (500GB). MS also announced a permanent Xbone price cut to $349. So I don't think Sony needs to undercut them as they'll be selling more at the same price point, hell they'd still be selling more at $399 but now that the 1TB is priced at $399, the 500GB model will have to get cheaper.

Next year will see the long awaited die shrinks to 14/16nm leading to smaller APUs and consoles. Due to this next year Sony will have a more significant pricecut(-$100).

So new prediction:

Q3/Q4 2016: PS4 Slim US$ 249, EU€ 249

Also expecting Microsoft to have a slimmer and cheaper console within 18 months.

I still think Sony should do 300 even if only temporarily in the holidays. I doubt XB1 will stay at 350. Sony is not interested in a price war, as they've said, but that doesn't mean they are okay with having an higher price, just that they don't want to go below the X1's price; they can still match it though.

Should be a pretty good E3 next year, More info on Horizon, God Of War 4 (hopefully) Gran Turismo 7, PS4 Slim and possible re branding such as changing the PS logo again. Sucker punches new thing etc. I'm looking forward to it already.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

The price cut will come.

But the slim model will be $299.

I don't think we'll see slim models for awhile. I mean, it wasn't until 2012 that Sony released the Super Slim PS3, and the original Slim PS3 was born out of necessity, literally dropping hardware in order to decrease size and cost. I think three years is a little optimistic to expect any kind of substantial enough hardware size reduction to turn out a model that is slimmer enough to even warrant calling a slim model. At the very least, Sony won't see it as necessary. Full system revisions like that are usually used when sales are starting to heavily decline, in order to give another push to get momentum going as long as necessary.

As it stands, staggering the top and bottom halves of the system the way they did has left the PS4 not looking all that big to begin with. I mean, it fits on top of my dresser with a 32 inch TV, controllers, and my Vita without any kind of issues, and that's lying down flat. Vertically, the thing is easy to sit in most places without issue because of how flat it is.

I think the 500GB model will get a price cut at the end of October, and in 2016 that model will get discontinued.

Sony will carry on producing the 500GB version until Christmas and then faze it out. The reason for this IMO will be create a sense of a 'fire sale' with the 500GB version or 'clearing old stock'. This allows them to sell a lot of console without announcing an official price drop. And then when the 500GB version is put to pasture, the price will still be $400 (1TB PS4), still a good deal because of the extra storage. To retail 'extra' value, I think they'll shift the TLOUR to the 1TB version.

The PS5 Exists.

I think Sony will cut the price this year at 349,98 $/€ ; and the PS4 slim will coming next year in November with another price cut: 299,98 $/€ .

I don't even think a slim version is necessary. Just make it run cooler and more energy efficient.

I feel like you're all way too optimistic about a drop all the way down to $300 in what may be one of the best years for the PS4. Why drop the price when you have multiple games coming that would push consoles even if the system was priced at $450? Price drops are a move generally to rebuild momentum just like full hardware revisions are. If you truly believe the PS4 is going to lose that much steam by the end of 2016, I'd love to hear your reasoning. At least right now, I see no reason to drop anything but maybe the 500GB system to $300 before 2017. Price drops are a tool, not scheduled events.
