The problem is still hardware price, really. People seem to expect game consoles to come out of the gate acting like high end PC's, but that's too expensive. At the same time, it won't be worth turning out the new $400 console in just another couple of years. That will be an even less substantial boost than PS3 to PS4. The problem is that we're starting to see the limits of gaming. Going forward, systems will only be so much more capable. So what if the PS5 will be able to do 60 FPS with marginally improved graphics? Who cares if the PS6 supports 4k gaming and can do 144 FPS on average? These aren't going to be game changing increases, which is exactly why it seems odd to me that people are expecting a new generation so soon.

Even if the PS4 wasn't a substantial boost, that was the best they could do for a $400 console over seven years after the launch of the PS3. I feel that alone speaks volumes for certain walls we're beginning to hit in gaming.

If what you're suggesting is true, then aren't you afraid that gaming as we know it will implode? How long are people going to tolerate the same experience? I've been playing games for 33 years or more and this is the first generation where I am no wowed. The PS4 and Xbone, they feel like prettier PS3 and 360s imo. It's really taken a substantial amount of excietment out of this generation for me. I couldn't imagine next generation providing the same thing where we get prettier versions of the same games etc.

Maybe VR is the solution?

That is a legitimate problem that we're advancing on. Games can only look so much more realistic. Games can only get so complex without becoming redundant. The next step, like you mention, is likely changing the way we play more than altering how what we play looks, and altering the way we play doesn't require a new generation right now. As it stands, VR is going to be introduced on the current generation, and depending on how its received, I could see it singlehandedly extending this generation, especially if AAA developers become interested in it. If we can distract from hardware limitations with other means, it could go a long way.

We have hit the point where game streaming is the best option. When platform holders can simply swap out server racks with the new hardware to enable the new shiny game -- you'll understand why game streaming is the future.

I think VR is gonna be the only system still using physical consoles in about 8 years.

People are just resistant to change man. So many people get so salty in regards to digital only games; So many people get so salty in regards to VR; and so many people get so salty in regards to game streaming. In each case I think those people need to stop whining and adapt.

That's odd, I suggested a price cut with the new matte effect consoles article and got voted down lol.

I think last gen has spoilt people and raised their expectations on when slim consoles actually arrive.

I would be surprised if we see a ps4 slim before 2017. I have it pegged at a 2018 release and a $199 price point. Two years before the PS5.

PS5 will not wait more than 5 years to launch simply because PS4 is so underpowered compared to PS1,PS2 and PS3. Those consoles had huge boosts in power, PS3 in particular. PS4 doesn't have that advantage and by year 4, games will have topped out totally. Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if it gets maxed out by next Christmas.

I think we'll see PS4 Slim by 2017, but I had PS5 launching the year afterwards.

PS5 will launch 2020 at the earliest

i understand PS4 doesn't have that big of a boost but PS4 dominance and price cut space and slim launches and games providess it enough time

it is looking like an al-out PS2 which was worse than GAMECUBE and XBOX 1 but its popularity and games and price-cuts provided it enough time

Also today, the generations are much longer as BIG Hardware LEAPS are a thing off the past, its not that PS4 is underpowered but more than since INTEL Dual Core,Computing performance has rarely made big jumps. Each Year INTEL revision make such minutes jumps that my 5 year old PC can play anything today without 1 bit of perfomance drop

Also graphics have allmost reached a level that they cannot be outright improved more but its more about detail which is more about development bdget not about hardware.PS4 can play almost a photo-realistic game.Look at DRIVECLUB,KILLZONE SHADOWFALL,INFAMOUS SECOND SON,METAL GEAR 5.HORIZON,BATTLEFRONT,BATTLFIELD,etc

PS4 will go something like this

2015 $50 price cut - $349 PS4

2016 PS4 SLIM - $349 PS4 SLIM

2017 $50 price cut - $299 PS4 SLIM

2018 PS4 SUPER SLIM - $299 PS4 SUPER SLIM

2019 $50 price cut - $249 PS4 SUPER SLIM

2020-2021 Cheap made PS4 with $50 price cut - $199 PS4 CHEAP SUPER SLIM

they are perfectly on track with games like

GRAN TURISMO 7,8

HORIZON

KILLZONE 4

INFAMOUS 3

LAST OF US 2

GTA 6,7 TIMED EXCLUSIVITY(it will happen)

FINAL FANTASY 15,16

FINAL FANTASY 7

METAL GEAR 5,6

KINGDOM HEARTS 3,4

CALL OF DUTY

STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT

TITANFALL 1,2

GOD OF WAR 4,5

UNCHARTED 4,5,6

DRAGON QUEST

I doubt Sony will have a pricecut this year, sales are still very good and Sony is in need of money after all the money they bleeded over the last years. Unless those sales numbers go down significantly, there is incencitive to lower the price to 349$/€

Also, a pricecut to 300 $/€ won't happen before a slim version is coming, which will not be before TSMC or GlobalFoundries (don't know where out of these 2 AMD is producing the chips for the PS4) got a good grip over the yield rates of the chip produced in 14/16nm, as else it would be to costly, and a slim version without the shrink is hardly possible as the risk of overheating would be too high

So I guess the only ones who can or will actually do a pricecut are Nintendo (it's high time!) and Microsoft (they have reserves, and sell for 300€ here anyway already)

With the 1TB model incoming for the same price as the 500GB model currently, a price cut kind of has to happen for the 500GB to remain a viable option to anybody.

I feel like you're all way too optimistic about a drop all the way down to $300 in what may be one of the best years for the PS4. Why drop the price when you have multiple games coming that would push consoles even if the system was priced at $450? Price drops are a move generally to rebuild momentum just like full hardware revisions are. If you truly believe the PS4 is going to lose that much steam by the end of 2016, I'd love to hear your reasoning. At least right now, I see no reason to drop anything but maybe the 500GB system to $300 before 2017. Price drops are a tool, not scheduled events.

Except historically the only console they price cut out of necessity was the ps3. Ps1 and ps2 had price cuts while still performing incredibly well so your logic, vs history and precedent clash with each other.

Target leaks $50 price cut

I WAS RIGHT
