Update? sony is also paying for the porting from PC to ps4?
BTW Sony & Shenmue team are saying the same thing...
That is why the game is only on PC and PS4.
It was less click baity media and more bitter competing platform owners faining concern about ks and other stuff to hide the misconception that other platforms are entitled to everything the 50% holding and rising market share leader gets.
Thanks jlmurph!

Looks like that Youtuber is doing the media spread misinformation.
"And everyone's Kickstarter has merit." - Malory Archer
And thus more BS spreads through the internet. =/

I have to wonder exactly where they're going to get the money for the rest of the development, though. The original games cost quite a bit of money to make, and Shenmue III must cost an exponential amount two generations later. |
If Shenmue was made as is with today's tools, it wouldn't cost nearly as much.
They had to build everything from scratch back then, since engines like Cry and U4 didn't exist. Everything had to be meticulously crafted by hand.
I'm trying to understand why a part of the internet is so hellbent in finding out "the truth" about Shenmue III and Sony's involvement, and there are so many articles about "hey, Shenmue III is pretty shady stuff, watch out!"
Who the hell cares? The game EXISTS, it has been funded (meaning you don't have to back it if you really don't want to or find this shady for... some reason) and it will come out someday. What more can we possibly need to know?

No some of us are just annoyed because it seems like we're being taken for fools. For all those that support the claim that it was all a big misunderstanding and the original plan was to completely fund development using Kickstarter why was the original goal set to $ 2 million. Why did they set their funding goal to 5 or 10% of what they would actually need? It makes no sense to me unless the original plan was that most of the funding was already in place and Kickstarter was being used to gauge interest or to get the game some attention.
As for entitlement tell that to Wii owners last gen when third parties were basically ignoring them for most of their big games. I don't think it should be considered entitlement to just want to know the truth. I'm just finding it really hard to believe their story and that it's the media to blame. I'm wondering if it's a case of them being surprised that it broke Kickstarter records and then deciding to pull some of the planned funding and get it from Kickstarter instead. I still don't feel anyone has explained the $2 million original goal in a way that makes any real sense. Maybe someone here can explain it since some people here feel they've gotten the truth about it.

Everything started because some guys things Sony is getting money from the Kickstart to developer a game funded by them... well just to be clear I support the use of KS to allow first buyers to get his copy of the game cheaper and found the game (you can do that with $29) for any game (big AA or small indie).
But that is not the case.
What is happening with Shenmue?
Yu Suzuki and team asked to Sega to revive Shenmue but Sega didn't have money to back up the project... Yu sugested the KS campaing and Sega allowed it.
Sony saw interest in the game and helped with the marketing and publicity... and funded the PS4 port too... so Sony will pay the PS4 version and they will marketing the game... of course they have some deal with it and the game will be only on PS4 when you talk about consoles.
Easy Sumary:
KS + Others funding money = Used to developer the game
Sony money = Used to PS4 port and marketing deal (that deal means PS4/PC only versions)
It is easy to understand.
