Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Truth about the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter. How clickbait media spread misinformation. Sony isnt Funding the development

I wish Sony would just come clean about all this. At least when there was confusion over the Microsoft Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusivity they came out and addressed it rather than adding to the confusion.

A game like this would probably require a 30-50 million budget to even hope to compete with games like Grand Theft Auto 6 which will proably have a 100+ million budget. How much is Sony reallygiving? Are they going to basically allow this to be sent to die and just milked it at their conference to get more gaming cred?

I must have missed that. Could you explain to me what the situation was and how it was cleared up?

its wasnt that much money the video explains. They spent 70 million $ for the original shenmue games but it included shenmue 1, 2 and the sega saturn version which was cancelled so basicly 3 games.

Yeah, but back then that was still a huge amount of money for 3 games, right? Or was that normal?

They were leaps and bound ahead of their time, they had to develop an engine from scratch etc. while now they are using Unreal Engine, and they don't have to/won't go for ZOMFG graphics this time, so if they get 10 million from the Kickstarter (which doesn't seem too unlikely) it should be a decent budget.

I just hope that even if they don't reach an acceptable budget from Kickstarter alone, they can find sufficient funding from an additional source. This game is too important to the industry to not come to fruition.

The video litteraly explains how two people from Sony DID clarify the situation within 2 days after the games announcement and provided links in the description.  He also explains that the problem is the clickbait media muddying the information.

4 ≈ One

Yeah, Yu Suzki said that around 10 million dollars is needed to reach his true vision of the game. If they offered a physical copy for the PS4, then it would probably be a lot easier.

It's actually 47 million according to the dude.

true sry

You guys do realize marketing costs are often more than game development costs right?

Just look at Witcher 3...

Development budget 12.2 million.
Marketing budget 25 million.

Really? Microsoft said whether it was actually a proper exclusive/Xbox exclusive/console exclusive or just timed without leaving any room for ambiguity? I must have missed that...

Yeah, they did.  We had a thread about it.  The guy said something like "Or deal is the same as always. Timed exclusive".  I could find it but you nah have to wait until tomorrow. I gotta go to work.

Nice video. Going to KS for the creative freedom is the right reason.

Still, backers bear all of the financial risk (if the game doesn't complete, they get nothing), but if it succeeds, Sony will take all the profit (standard for any publishing deal). Sony can't lose, and that is NOT good because capitalism has to involve risk to be efficient.

it's not pure profit for sony.  Sony will still pay for the marketing which sometimes can also be big.

What the difference from what Sony said few days ago?
