Forums - Gaming - Is the Wii U the worst console of all time?(OP clarification)

Hello everyone,

I am not trying to start a flame war but I am trying to be realistic and objective.

Hardware

In terms of hardware the Wii U gamepad has no purpose. People don't understand the concept. In comparison with the Wii-at least the Wii controller made sense, the Wii masterfully executed its concept on Wii sports. The Wii U? Not so much.

Software

You can complain all you want about the gamecube. Yet it still had third party support like Resident evil 4,Beyond Good and Evil and Soul Calibur II. The Wii U doesn't. What's worst the Gamecube had strong first party support Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime and Windwaker. The Wii U doesn't even have a Prime game nor  a strong Mario game. We don't even know if Zelda will even come up for Wii U or be skipped all together. Remember, Nintendo can change their minds.

It's an incredibly sad day when Nintendo fans  are excited because Nintendo is localizing Mother into Earthbound Origins. Are you guys serious? A 26 year old game its the best nintendo can give us.

Please be respectful in this thread and I would call upon anyone to systematically challenge my points.

I really tried, but I'm afraid I could only read as far as the bold before cashing in my chips.

Put it next to the philips CDi and see which you think is worse tho.

No, no, no. You see, a multibillion dollar conglomerate like Philips investing millions in developing a CD-ROM game console/movie player in the early 1990s wasn't quite "serious."

GameCube first party is overrated.

Mario 3D World >>> Sunshine.

Like seriously take off the nostalgia glasses with Sunshine, it's a terrible Mario game with bloated level design all set on a tropical island (who the hell thought a Mario game with all tropical themed levels was a good idea?), that had camera glitches and bugs up the wazoo and the back end of the game was piss poor.

Splatoon >>> Pikmin

These were the so-called "new IP" of the GameCube ... I'm sorry, Splatoon is way better. It's a far better game and truly the next great Nintendo IP. Not only that but Wii U has Pikmin 3 as well.

Mario Kart 8 >>> Mario Kart: Double Dash

Double Dash had a pathetic number of tracks, MK8 has far more content.

Smash U = Smash Melee

Smash Melee was the one big IP Nintendo got right on the GCN, but Smash U matches it IMO.

DKC: Tropical Freeze > DK: Jungle Beat

EAD Tokyo made a good effort here, but a "real" DKC game with actual controls the return of David Wise trumps a spin-off DK game with bongo controls.

If Zelda U is better than Wind Waker, then the Wii U has the GameCube beat in many major Nintendo IP.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with most of these comparisons.

Graphics and gameplay wise, sunshine had more than mario 3d world. Sunshine incorporated puzzles, exploration, and platforming into one. 3d World just had platforming.

Pikmin was also way more content filled than splatoon was, and seems to have done its own unique thing in the puzzle genre. Splatoon is pretty much call off duty with cute graphics and paint. But regardless, they were 2 different genres so comparing them is just laughable.

Mario kart double dash even now holds tight controls and wait for it ........ double characters in a kart. Mario kart 8 literally did not do that because of the wii u hardware. Also, just try to compare the local multiplayer and just laugh at Mario kart 8's measly coin racing.

smash U may match melee with the casual audience and content for its time, but there is no denying that melee is what gives big life to the competitive smash bros community.

Zelda U may not even be exclusively on the wii u. And even if it was, the gamecube had 2 legend of zeldas (twilight princess and wind waker)

The wii u has good games, but there is no  denying that they have been severly limited by hardware and rushes to release early whereas the gamecube offered amazing visuals for its time and was plagued by an image problem, not a continuous drought of games problem.

Mario Sunshine's graphics underwhelmed even in 2002, no one was saying "wow! what a visual showcase!". Mario 64 looked great for 1996, Mario Sushine not so much by 2002.

Mario Kart 8 (and every Mario Kart since) doesn't use the double rider gimmick from Double Dash, because it was something no one really gave two craps about.

Pikmin was a short ass game by the way. Splatoon will grow over time.

GameCube gets put on a pedestal on this forum because of the age demographic here, most people grew up with the GameCube and see it through rose colored glasses. I remember the actual reality for what it was.

And actually selling only 22 million units when the system was $99.99 for half of its product cycle is fairly pathetic. Even the Wii U probably could match that or even exceed it by a bit if it was $150 (inflation adjusted) for the back end of its life cycle.

Nintendo totally screwed up with Mario Sunshine (Mario on Vacation!), Wind Waker (cartoony Zelda!), and ditching the multiplayer blockbuster FPS formula (GoldenEye) for the solitary, bordering on depressing Metroid Prime experience and thinking that would take its place.

But look at all the classics it had! Two Zelda games.... three or four Mario games... the only console version of The 7th Guest...

Not to mention their flagship game, a FMV "interactive movie" called Voyeur.

That is why we shouldn't talk about it... Those Zelda games give me nightmares to this day.

But... but... Voyeur! A game that went to levels of "MATURITY" Night Trap wouldn't touch!

I think you guys should not use a semantic loophole and say "Well, X console by an obscure company is worst" that is like me saying that "My little brother made a console and that one is worst than Wii U." I am talking about "serious" console creators like Microsoft, Sega, Sony and Nintendo. I dare anyone to say that the Wii U is better than any of consoles made by any of this companies and you will see how the Wii U stacks up poorly even against the original Xbox or the PSone.

Read the title of your own thread.

I did- and it doesnt' invalidate my point. I said only to focus in serious companies that include Nintedo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft. Yet you and other posters seem to disregard what I said and keep on bringing examples like the philips CD-I or the Jaguar which I bet only a minority of gamers have ever heard of. Even worst, I bet any casual fan only thinks of the big three including Sega. Yet you still haven't answered my question, has any of this four companies ever made a console worst than the Wii U?

No. Not even close.

Gamepad is awesome and I hope they support it in NX though not as a built-in controller, but as synergy with WiiU and/or handheld.

There are plenty of great WiiU games, even third party from early on. ZombiU is still one of my top games on the console. Seriously under-appreciated game.

Even if we only count the biggest console manufacturers, WiiU is better than Sega Saturn or PS Vita. (IMO)

Oh wow, did you just suggest that Atari were not a serious company in terms of gaming history? Really?
