But again, we go into the fact that the X360 userbase bought a huge bit more than the PS3 did in the games department: despite the fact the PS3 has a ratio of 2.5:1 for console install base in the US, the top-10 is littered with X360 games and not with PS3 games.

The X360 had new IPs never on it's console before (such as Rock Band, Lost Odyssey), and the PS3 only charted with one game that it's always been known as a PS3 exclusive.

And for those saying that this proves that GTAIV is going to sell oh-so well on the PS3 version the X360, lets do this......

I am officially calling out every PS3 fanboy that's willing to do a GTAIV PS3/X360 bet.

I'll bet a week's ban, and a month's signature that GTAIV on X360 will outsell the PS3 version, in it's first full month on the NPD charts, by atleast 1.6:1 or more. Willing to take that better? After all, DMC was 1.26 to 1...So it'll be good odds for you :)

That's a very safe bet on your part.....I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's anything less than 2 - 1 in favor of the 360.

The 360 already had sequels to all the games which were most popular on the original XBox. Gears was a new franchise and the total sales worldwide are just above 4.5 million (including bundle sales, CliffyB didn't specify if this includes PC sales, but let's assume not)

On the other hand you have the PS3 which saw meanly new franchices being introduced, considering install base Motorstorm with over 3 million sales and Resistance with over 2.5 million sales performed remarkably for launch title new franchices. Gears was released later on during the 360 lifecycle with many people buying the console for shooters or anticipated shooters like Halo.

The more anticipated PS3 games are yet to be released, many of them hitting this year! The PS3 will do very well in the US this year, actually it already performs quite well. There are still many millions of XBox owners who still haven't upgraded to a 360 yet, despite all the major XBox games are on there and the platform being discontinued for years. I really think once most of them upgraded 360 sales are going to hit a wall.

The only reason Motorstorm and Resistance are where they're at is because they were pack-in games.

I don't remember Resistance being bundled in America.....maybe in Europe or Japan....

 Agreed.

Look at those DS numbers! Undertracked in Jan, anyone?

Amazing, you actually used the word undertracked... too bad it was applied to the DS and the DS was way over tracked last month and both you and TheSource come up with a sh*t load of excuses why you guys were right and NDP "could" be wrong. Also, the DS was over tracked by less than 10% ioi, is that really enough for you to make the above comment? Isn't that a "statistical" tie?

Anyway, here is a complete comparison VGC vs NDP (I used the VGC numbers leo-j posted):

NDP    NDP +10%        VGC     Difference        Diff %
Nintendo DS 587600 646360 584153 -62207 -9.62%
Wii 432000 475200 561332 86132 18.13%
PlayStation 2 351800 386980 273933 -113047 -29.21%
PlayStation 3 280800 308880 338493 29613 9.59%
Xbox 360 254600 280060 355921 75861 27.09%
PlayStation Portable 243100 267410 265475 -1935 -0.72%

See, your comment seems kind of inappropriate. Just 9.6% undertracked, it makes you look just like me, a fanboy. Exactly the same as the PS3 and on top of that the DS was WAY over tracked a lot last month and guess what... last month the PS3 was also under tracked.

Anyway the fact that the PS3 is under tracked while 360/Wii are over tracked is kind of common by now...

ioi, I just ask you to be "The Boss", treat NDP data like any other official source. Adjust VGC based on it, make your numbers reliable. It's pretty sad to see the 360 beating the PS3 when even freaking MS puts up press releases about getting their arses kicked, don't you think?

DMC4 numbers are also pretty 360 biased. ioi, have you considered that your data might be a little too 360/Wii biased? Maybe you can adjust your numbers based on this fact. I don't know enough about your sample data but I can see it isn't right...

One more thing, I admire your work. I bitch and whine but the only thing I wish for is for your data to be more accurate.

PS: If there is something wrong with my table just let me know and I will fix it, I'm watching a movie while doing this ;)

This is where you are assuming ioi is trying to be close to NPD.

It has been made clear that ioi is no longer adjusting data due to what NPD releases.

And here's a quote from another thread that sums up ioi's feelings towards the whole thing:

I do get annoyed when people compare our data to NPD and say "VG Chartz are miles out". That just shows a huge ignorance and lack of intelligence in looking at what the figures actually represent, where differences may come from and the fact that many of the "deviations" are totally "intentional" in that we are not trying to replicate NPD and are of no suprise to me. What many also don't understand is that NPD will make adjustments after they release their initial figures - which are not made public - and those who do see the adjustments will see that often it brings their inital data closer to ours.

In was in Europe in the 60gb Starter Pack from July to September. In no other region or time was Resistance bundled with the PS3.

ioi

I know that Dolla. But if MS, Sony, Nintendo, press and investors consider NDP the official data why doesn't ioi use it? It's pretty sad to see a MS press release saying they sold less than the PS3 and then come here and see something totally different, don't you agree? It's just plain sad to read all the press-releases from Sony, MS and Nintendo, read the numbers all over the internet as "truth" and then come here, to our beloved VGChartz, and see the wrong numbers.

ioi must think about his site. What he wants from it and if he wants people to trust his data or not. It's pretty clear to me that going against NDP, MS, Sony and Nintendo is not the way to do it.

Anyone who says NDP is completely idiotic.

NPD stands for National Purchase Diary.

What is NDP?  It sure as hell doesn't mean National Diary Purchase

Anyone?  I can think of at least four awful acronymns that could be used to descibe those who say it.
