Forums - Sony - Sony has just confirmed that now that the Kickstarter goal has been reached they are in fact helping with funding and development of Shenmue 3

I assumed they had a deal from the get-go

I always though that this is what the kick starter was about. People who donate will surely buy the game too. It's just some sort of pre order money even before the game is being made

Basically, sony is partnering with 'em to make the game after the kickstarter goal was reached. So yes.

lol of course they're co-funding. Who on earth thinks $2m is enough for a Shenmue game? The first two were some of the most expensive games ever made, and development costs have not gone down since then.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

But it seems so strange to have a deal based upon a variable like that. They could have funded it without asking for 2 million in Kickstarter first. I wonder how many people will be cancelling their donation now that it is exclusive (assummption)?

I still don't get why they thought this was necessary. It was always going to reach 2M, come on. Am I missing something?

That shouldn't be a problem, the Kickstarter specified that this was going to be PS4-PC only anyway.

Did it? I guess I missed that. I have some friends that were pretty sure it was coming to other consoles.

But that's a moot point. I'm still quite curious why they wanted to kickstart that 2 million. A funding deal would have been in the works for months before E3. Why wouldn't they have just funded the whole things? The interest was definitely always there. Maybe Sega was the variable; only agreeing to accept the offer if public interest was completely proven. Still doesn't make complete sense to me though.

It was pretty obvious, but good to have confirmation

I wonder what Sony studio will lend a hand. I am guessing Japan Studio for convenience reasons.

I am thinking the same sediment. SCEJ generally does well with games. Pairing them up with Suzuki San will be quite a dangerous combination.
