Forums - Nintendo - Should Nintendo Focus On More Popular Genres?

Maybe Nintendo should look at bringing back the arcade-ish sports sim?

Or maybe there are other sports that they could move into ... EA has a lock on the NFL license, but there doesn't seem to be anything stopping Nintendo from making an NBA, NHL, tennis, etc. titles.

Maybe an NBA Street type game would be a good one to visit.

I think Nintendo needs to make more shooters too. Splatoon shouldn't be the only one, they should have a FPS IP also.

More competitive games in general I think. Splatoon, Mario Kart, and Smash are their three competitive IP and all three are successful, Nintendo should focus more on that rather than more co-op or single player offline experiences IMO.

I get it too, I don't want to "hold hands" with friends when gathering around the home console. We want to compete, tap into that Nintendo.

they should but they cant. too many IPs.

They probably could but honestly it would probably mean scaling back some of their other games.

As much as I personally like some of these games ... Nintendo totally is over-invested in "weird/nichey Japanese games that don't even sell in Japan".

See: Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Sin & Punishment, Devil's Third, Fatal Frame, gulp yes even Xenoblade etc.

They'd be better off investing in genre types that are more popular in the West I think, even what's left of the console audience in Japan seems to prefer that.

Also way too many 2D games ... Mario Maker, ok, at least that's bringing something new and sure to sell, but DKC, Kirby, Yoshi, on top of NSMB/NSLU was overkill.

thats what i was saying

Splatoon finally marks Nintendo's entry into the online shooter space, I think we'd all probably agree that they should have done this a lot sooner.

What other genres should Nintendo be looking at? The mideval/fantasy open world game? Yes they have Zelda, but things like Morrowwind and Witcher III seem to be all the rage right now, maybe a new IP in that genre would be a good way to go. MMORPGs perhaps?

I think more multiplayer "crowd pleaser" type games are things Nintendo should look at too ... another multiplayer FPS besides Splatoon should be a target. I really like the idea of re-aquiring the available James Bond license, but even something original would be great.

Too many 2D platformers in Nintendo's fold right now, not enough shooters, fantasy open world games, and sports games.

waste of resources... sports games and shooters... no thanks get enough of that on pc/ps4+xbox one.

Id be more happy if they just gave us a real 3D mario game (eg. Mario Sunshine 2), and they actually moved up the release date of Zelda.

Getting a new zelda game should be something every nintendo consol should have, and early in life.

They should emphasize the competitive aspect of Star Fox U too, but unfortunately they're probably going to fixate on "look at this wacky way to use the Wii U gamepad!" aspect of it since Miyamoto seems hell bent to prove the Wii U gamepad is useful for something.

Still, I think a game like Star Fox could learn from Splatoon. It should be online, with online battle/versus modes. Maybe squadron based battles (ie: 4 vs 4).

Well they need a western developed open world RPG for sure considering the genre's popularity. Sony's making one with Horizon, and Microsoft has Fable. They could always do a big budget console Pokemon game but that would still be catering to the same Nintendo fans that are buying a WiiU regardless.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Nintendo needs to capture more of that audience to continue having their own consoles....

While I don't necessarily think Splatoon has opened the floodgates for people jumping to Wii U, I think it's shown that there's demand for this type of game on Nintendo platforms.

I think you're mostly spot-on.

Skylanders Type Amiibo Hub Game

Competetive FPS perhaps with a light hearted twist (ie: Bond or even something like Left 4 Dead and TimeSplitters got this right)

Minecraft style game

Sports Games like 1080, Wave Race, etc. coming back I think make some sense too.

JRPGs though ... I hate to say it but no. As cool as Xenoblade looks it's pretty clear even the Japanese didn't buy it.

A Western fantasy RPG with online elements probably is the smarter way to go.

I think Nintendo could pull unique twists on genres, like they did with Splatoon and the shooter genre, and make a hit out of it.

Of course, they should still continue to focus on the games and genres that defines what makes Nintendo Nintendo.

The 'nintendo' genre needs to expand and diversify or Nintendo will keep one of the factors that cause it to struggle right now.

Yes, TES and Witcher are all the rage, they're medieval, but you're forgetting that all those games are M/PEGI 18 - Witcher is quite brutal visually at times with some themes - I don't think Nintendo is quite willing to go there.
