They are two distinct markets and they are treated as seperate catagories of devices. Only in console war type discussions, will a handful of nintendo fans (just you on here) try to say that handhelds are a part of the console market. There's a huge difference between being called a handheld console and being considered a console in the video game market.

Is it a different market? Yes, absolutely. But the question at hand is "Why is Sony winning the console war". Being in two different markets does not negate the fact that they are in fact both consoles.

The console war discussion is about the console market only unless specified.  You know that and you like to throw handhelds into it anyway. I'll leave this as is. I'm satsified with how this went. haha.

What exactly is the point of this argument. No matter which way you put it, it's two different markets. If you combine handhelds and home consoles why stop there. Mobiles and PC also play games and that are another 2 different markets, wanna chuck those in.

Why is it important that you group handhelds and home consoles together?

They didn't screw up and to an extent, learned from PS3 era mistakes. Gamers also understand that Sony tends to spread out quality titles so that droughts aren't felt for too long. There is also something for everyone across genres and has been their staple since PS1.

I'd say that it's because the other guys fucked up, but they'd probably still win even if MS/Ninty did better, though it'd be much closer. I'd say it's because the PS brand has become so popular, Xbox is still growing and it can recover just like how Sony did with the PS3, but Ninty does need to establish a console brand. Mega NES?
