James Bond Distribution Rights Coming Up For Grabs

James Bond may bring his license to kill to another Hollywood studio after a lucrative stint at Sony Pictures, sources tell Variety.

The November 6 release of “Spectre” will mark the end of a multi-picture pact between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Sony that has encompassed “Casino Royale,” “Quantum of Solace” and “Skyfall,” the highest-grossing 007 film in franchise history.

However, insiders speculate that the close relationship between MGM chief Gary Barber and Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara could result in the super-spy shifting addresses to the Burbank studio.

In an exclusive sit-down interview, newly-minted Sony Pictures Entertainment motion picture group chairman Tom Rothman acknowledged that the fight for the Bond rights will be fierce.

They have Spider-Man.

Bond is really property of EON Productions and MGM too, it's not really a "Sony franchise" per se.

Wow, that would be terrible news if true. The Bond films have made Sony a lot of money.

Actually the funny thing is this may prompt Sony to double down hard on the Super Mario movie rights, from leaks it appears some basic frame work of a deal was already done with Nintendo.

Sony still has Spider-man, but this would be a big loss for Sony if this were to happen.

Sony should start rounding up rights to alot of video game franchises since everything is being taken.  The Mario movie is a good start but need other game franchises that Sony doesn't own.

Who cares, they should concetrate on making movies internationally like with playstation instead focusing on anglo american markets. American movies are too expensive to make so its better to oursource to other places.

Okay Sony, so know where is my RoboTech movie?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

What a fiasco. Spectre will be the end of an era for Sony Bond films perhaps and it's been a good run, can someone else take up the mantle?

Though I can't remember anything memorable about any of the games at all made in the last 10 years...perhaps another studio would be able to handle it better.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

They're not too expensive if they pull in over $1bn!

They still do get money from Spider-man films, though obviously we don't know how the deal is structured (well if we do, I'm still not interested in stolen information)

But clearly they need to hold onto Bond. But it is merely speculation how any deal would be structured and what leverage they have to keep it, versus what opportunities the actual owners have to start a bidding process

It would make sense because James Bond only wants the best. We know this already.

And then he wants to run the best into the ground as quickly as possible, so he can get something newer and shinier ASAP. James Bond was Sony's downfall confirmed
