There's a join friend option in the menu.

Just join in, and you'll be in the same lobby as your friend.

Simple as that.

As others have said, just use it to join a lobby which your friend is playing in. It's a nice feature and I've been in a group with six people from VGC and my partner, and it was a lot of fun! Having dedicated friend lobbies would be better, but take what you can.
