PS4 isn't complex. It has a pretty standard CPU and GPU and one big pool of fast RAM. There's no Cell-like mysteries to its innards. Graphics will of course improve as devs gain more experience with the hardware and better tools, but we will never see a PS4 game that shows the same kind of leap over Killzone Shadowfall that The Last of Us or God of War Ascension show over Resistance Fall of Man. In fact, I doubt any console will ever show that kind of leap again. |
I think we all agree it won't be as big, but I still think we'll see a sizable leaps especially with third parties, partially down to standard logic of devs getting better with said hardware as you say but also extrernal technologies becoming better and more efficient. photogrammetry is something I think is just beginning to be utilised in game worlds (star wars Battlefront for example) and the result is something far more convincing the what we've seen thus far this gen.
I think this E3 in particular will be very informative on the issue.
If I wanted a good estimate of how well the PS4's power had been utilised thus far, I wouldn't be asking the CEO.

You dont need time, its clearly evident in games that have been built for the current gen. The difference between 7th gen, cross gen and 8th gen games is as clear as day, even on PC. It will only get better, no one can deny it.

It's just that I always see PS3 and 360 held up as an example of how much progress can be made this gen graphically, and I think that's just setting people up for disappointment.

Except your pic of TLOU is from the PS4 version... I think you are looking for pics like this...
Better than Uncharted? Yeah, but again let's not go crazy. |
Those TLOU pics are the same, just a different resolution. The level of detail between both versions is relatively the same, just the PS4 version runs a lot better and uses the cutscene character models in real time.
With off the shelf hardware this gen, good luck with that.

Also making a notce of the people that are all for graphics since when a game fails to live up to those expecations of the past, people tend to turn coat and claim "graphics don't have to be amazing" to defend their previous talks.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

I don't know, this is Rockstar, one of the biggest and most funded devs in the industry. When people though PS360 were capped off, they brought us GTA5, which pretty much blew every other game out of the water, graphically. I'm very interested to see how a potential Red Dead sequel and GTA6 will look.

Depends on the game, really. I think it's more or less people feel that reolution and framerate don't need to be top of the line for a game to still look and run good. i.e. Just because isn't 1080p/ 60 FPS doesn't mean it's automatically a graphical failure. :|

One is prerendered video and the other is running in real time.
In addition to the enhanced character models, the cutscenes use superior shadows, textures, effects and post-processing compared the actual in-game PS3 graphics. Showing a pre-rendered cutscene shows nothing about PS3's graphical capabilities except that it can play HD full motion video.
