Forums - Sony - Sony now Calls the PS Vita a “Legacy Platform” Outside of Japan/Asia

Except that the Wii U will continue to see the same level of support outside of the US until its successor is released.

The Vita represents the end of the line for SCE's mobile console device aspirations.

As an early supporter of the PSV (pre-order, day 1 user), I still like the device and consider it to be the best handheld console I've ever used, but as of now, no significant support in the NA market can be expected and it's been a very long time since I was a part of the grey market import niche.

This is your opinion.
I am very happy about the PS Vita line-up in this year, very good games released and much more good ones will release!
And even if you think it is not getting supported -> it is selling better without support than Wii U with support. Think about that.

In all fairness, consumers like myself represent a large part of the problem that led to the underwhelming commercial performance of the PSV.

About the only time I take the PSV anywhere is on long trips where I'm not driving. Because it doesn't see much use and I would rather play on the PS4 when I feel like playing a game, I rarely buy software for it. There's no reason for me to buy a $40 or $30 game that will only be played on a trip.

If I want to play a quick 5-15 minute game on the go to kill time, I always have an iPhone on me, which while not the same experience as a button/thumbstick portable console, is fine as throwaway entertainment.

Nothing's changed; this was just an acknowledgement of what the market already knew.

There simply is no significant market for the PSV in the West.

The PSV still makes for a good companion device for the PS4, and it remains a good device for playing old PSP and PS1 games. For anything else, it's pretty much import Japanese games for those who are into that market.

and yet....

weekly hardware chart: 16th may 2015 (last sales data we have)

Vita  in eu  > Wii U in eu.

Vita in Japan > Wii U in japan

Vita globally > Wii U globally.

Thats like saying theres no market for the Wii U outsides of the US.

The vita still has alot of good games getting made for it.

Why on earth is selling slightly more than a home console surprising or strange?

An update:

A Sony representative has clarified Andrew House's comments about the PlayStation TV and PS Vita to GamesBeat with the following statement:

“What Andy mentioned as ‘legacy platform’ was part of the write-off for PS Vita components for the first generation of the PS Vita, which is no longer available in the market. And he did not directly mean the current PS Vita and PS TV models, which are available in the market. Our portable business will be continued, and many users are now enjoying PlayStation 4 remote play features as well as original PS Vita game titles on PS Vita and PS TV.”

Now THAT is some pretty fine PR spin if I ever saw it.

While 3rd party usually keep makeing games for a system if theres a large enough user base still there.

But there's not.

And yes, that spin is something else.

Personally, his legacy comment to me simply means they no longer support it with internet software.  But the Internet ran with it to mean the console is completely dead thus the need to rush out a PR "correction".  Unfortunately for Sony, they may need another PR spin to fix the PR spin.

I didn't take it to mean that ... I took it to mean that they won't actively be making games for it (aside from, hopefully, Gravity Rush 2).

I don't see why they would turn online support off for it, though. Can't imagine it takes that many resouces ... plus, software sales are still pretty decent. Vita isn't dead, but it is now more than ever certainly niche.

Because Wii U is getting much more software in Europe and has very good marketing here!

Is it? I'm sure Vita has had more software releases so far in 2015 and has more upcoming software releases slated for between now and the end of the year in Europe. And this applies to both physical and digital releases.

Once Wii U release schedule ramps up in Q4 we'll have a much clearer picture. Especially as this is by far the biggest sales period for Wii U historically.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Wrong, they refered to the Vita 1000, the PSTV and Vita 2000 are unaffected....

What marketing? Seriously, Wii U has no marketing at all. At least not until Splatoon, but of course that has had no influence of sales yet. I've seen like 3 Wii U comercials in total. 2 when it launched and one when Pikmin released. They didn't even really market Mario Kart 8 or Smash Bros here, apart from Nintendo Direct and such.

Where do you live?
In Germany there is almost no advertising for Playstation in TV. Nintendo is getting a lot advertising in TV!

You are right, Vita is getting more games than Wii U.
But Wii U is getting much more games which should help to boost the hardware.
This is the difference, Wii U is getting a lot games which should help the hardware to sell good. Vita is getting only few games which should help the hardware to sell good.
