Best Console Ever?

NES 34 4.41%

SNES 134 17.38%

N64 80 10.38%

GC 52 6.74%

Wii 45 5.84%

PS1 63 8.17%

PS2 259 33.59%

PS3/360 72 9.34%

Xbox 17 2.20%

Genesis 15 1.95%

Total:771

My thoughts:

1. NES - 90% market share, virtually 99% of industry support, every game was a new IP or an amazing sequel to it. Launched SMB, Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Castlevania, Mega Man and on and on.

2. SNES - Could be number 1, but I give that to NES because of originality and market dominance. SNES was everything great about NES but better, with massive graphics and sound leap adding to the story elements of titles like Final Fantasy. An incredibly diverse lineup of AAA games, the last console to be truly the home of Nintendo 1st party and all 3rd party, most of which was exclusive.

3. PS2 - The strongest market leader after NES, it had the same level of complete 3rd party support and diversity of software. Lacking the Nintendo 1st party support, but it did have some exclusive or at least timed-exclusive special 3rd party titles like GTA3-VC-SA. 3D graphics done right.

4. PS3, XB360 (tie) - The jump to HD was very impressive. I give these systems a tie because the experience offered by both was very similar. 90% of the libraries are the same, in particular the big-selling key franchises like COD, GTA, AC, FF, ME, ES:O, etc. The games that defined the generation were on both consoles, while the 1st party games were more complimentary than market leaders.

5. N64 - the 5th gen is my least favorite, with the crisp 2D gameplay of gen 3 and 4 giving way to clunky polygons and poor controls in a 3D environment. Even at the time of release I longed for the polish of the previous consoles. That said, the jump to 3D and improved graphics and sound did offer amazing new experiences. It's a worthwhile debate as to which system, N64 or PS1, provided the definitive 5th gen experience. I give the nod to N64 because of it's superior game-rendered visuals and landmark titles. PS1 offered properly executed advantages of the CD format for the first time and a larger library with full 3rd party support, but few titles hold up to the elite N64 games. Zelda OoT, Mario64, MarioKart were breath-taking at the time, and also stand the test of time to look great today.

I wonder why I new this thread would be filled with Nintendo just entering it...

Simply put, the PS2 not being there, and actually topping the list, makes it doesn't be objective at all.

It's not my personal top 1 but if it's supposed to be objetive and not opinion based it's it.

The most successful console system we ever had, period.

maybe because it said top 5 consoles of all time? i mean, surely youd expect to see three or more nintendo consoles.

ps2 sold like a beast, but we cant base this solely on sales, right? great sales =/= great console, but im sure i dont need to explain why that is. i know you know that. also, how do you judge what was the most successful console ever? is it by sales or by profit?

PS2 did also beat the PC when it comws to the best games, something that PS1 did not achieve. PS2 made consoles the dominant force in the gaming market.

My FAVOURITE console of all time. (because we haven't objective best console)

Objectively the SNES could maybe be the best console of all time sure. I'd say it's either it or NES or maybe PS2 based on the sheer size of it's library (even though there aren't many games on it that interested me). None of those to me though, it's ;

1. Nintendo 64
2. Sony PlayStation
3. SEGA Dreamcast
4. Nintendo NES
5. Super Nintendo

When counting platforms including PC, put it in second place .

Here's my completely objective list. This isn't my own opinions or anything, just like the list in the OP isn't OP's own opinions, no, this is fact, the actual, real, 100% true list:

1. PS3
2. PS2
3. PS1
4. N64*
5. X360*

*The PS4 may take either of these spots.

1) 360
2) GameCube
3) Xbix One
4) PS3
5) N64

Totally my opinion. Never owned an SNES, and my first two PSs broke as a kid. So they are not listed.

Most people here are either too young to remember the SNES or just plain sony fanboys that won't ever accept that the SNES is by far the best console ever when you actually talk about having great games

#1 SNES (only true and clear winner)
#2-5 : doesn't really matters, will be mostly about opinion

I don't think you could consider every aspect of a console in an objective manner. Any list that anyone can make will always have a shred of subjectivity. That being said, this is how I'd rank my top 5.

1) Xbox 360

2) SNES

3) GameCube

4) PlayStation 2

5) Genesis

Current gaming platforms - Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS, PC
