I know, semantics suck, but the literal definition of indie is no use whatsoever, as it says nothing about a game. Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is an indie game, by colloquial definitions

In other words: In your opinion small games funded by some of the world's largest game companies (e.g. Rain, Clash of Heroes) can automatically be called indie games.
Okay, why not. I add Nintendo's Captain Toad and Pullblox to my list. Oh, and Microsoft's ilomilo.

Well then I say Minesweeper. Seriously how many workhours got lost due to Minesweeper/Solitaire/Freecell/Space Cadet/Majhongg being bundled with Windows? Probably the biggest timekillers next to Tetris.
Seriously though, I tend to keep myself informed about Indie games, so few games can really surprise me. Defender's Quest however, an RPG/Tower Defense mix, got me totally by surprise. Also Sunrider, but I Kickstarted that one, so it just surpassed my expectations.
On the Flop side, there's Jagged Alliance Flashback, which I kickstarted and was a total letdown
Finally, Katawa Shoujo. Best. Visual. Novel. ever. Plus, it's totally free.
