I would say yes, at least in my 28+years of following Nintendo. I hope it succeeds, too.
It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

It's memorable, I'll give them that.
For all the wrong reasons.

I think it's a strong efford, but it's not as close as the Pokemon boom in the nineties. Pokemon was everywhere at everytimes. Even though I think the main diferences between those two is market domination. When Pokemon was new, everyone owned a GameBoy (even people not interested in gaming, that bought it for Tetris and then gave the console to their kids), so the marketing was incredibly effective. The problem with Splatoon is that, no matter how well it's advertised, it's limited by the WiiU's sales and the market's perception on the console.
Yes, maybe for a while. And that's good to see because it's nice to see something new every once in a while.
But the biggest they've ever pushed a new IP? I dunno...Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Brain Training...there's a lot there to choose from.

I admit I am surprised (and impressed) at how hard they're pushing this, I expected their usual release via ninja-piloted stealth bomber.
The ads could definitely be better, but at least there ARE ads. Mess Fest, the Global Testfire, and the manga in Japan are pleasantly unexpected.
