I think it's a strong efford, but it's not as close as the Pokemon boom in the nineties. Pokemon was everywhere at everytimes. Even though I think the main diferences between those two is market domination. When Pokemon was new, everyone owned a GameBoy (even people not interested in gaming, that bought it for Tetris and then gave the console to their kids), so the marketing was incredibly effective. The problem with Splatoon is that, no matter how well it's advertised, it's limited by the WiiU's sales and the market's perception on the console.
