Forums - Microsoft - [UPDATE] Microsoft Cannot Remotely Brick Your Xbox One

@Azerth

"SNEI may also take steps on behalf of its device platform partners to disable permanently or temporarily any device on which you receive PSN First Party Services and through use of which you violate the Community Code of Conduct."

I read this like,... if they find pirated software they can block your ability to use said "first party services".

(if you have a pirated game, they can make you unable to say... play it online / multiplayer)

It doesnt read like they can brick your consol.

That's from one of the commentors, so it's hardly a good source for this; people spout all sorts of bull-crap and misinformation in the comments.

Proper confirmation from a reliable article/source would be nice.

ok how about from sonys ToS

Unless otherwise required by law, SNEI is not responsible for monitoring or recording any activity on PSN, including communications, although SNEI reserves the right to do so and you hereby give SNEI your express consent to monitor and record your and your Sub Account's activities and communications. SNEI reserves the right to remove any content and communication from PSN First Party Services at SNEI's sole discretion without notice and to terminate any account through which violations of the Community Code of Conduct occur. SNEI may also take steps on behalf of its device platform partners to disable permanently or temporarily any device on which you receive PSN First Party Services and through use of which you violate the Community Code of Conduct. SNEI may use any data it collects, including the content of your communications, the time and location of your activities, your Online ID and IP address and any other collectable data, to enforce this Agreement or protect the interests of SNEI, its affiliates, PSN First Party Service users or SNEI's or its affiliates' licensors. Such information may be disclosed to appropriate authorities or agencies. Any other use is subject to the terms of SNEI's Privacy Policy. SNEI has no liability for any violation of this Agreement by you or by any other PSN First Party Service user.

Much better. And worrying from both Sony and Microsoft. Surely this is illegal in most countries?

Having said that, JRPGfan is right in that it can be interpreted as removal of first party services on a specific device rather than full functionality. Stuff like this is why I never became a lawyer.

neh... its " disable permanently or temporarily any device on which you receive " otherwise it would say something like "block access to" PSN First Party Services or "disable the services on any device"
it's pretty clear they can say they can disable your devices..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

I must admit it's frightening to know that both console manufacturers (even Sony) have the ability to brick consoles due to a violation on a contract. But one has to assume this will be only done in extreme cases when a harsh punishment should be dealt.

I'm glad those leakers got their consoles bricked. Breaking an NDA is not only illegal, but also unethical. They can't leave stuff up to surprise, noo... they have to leak stuff so people over-analyze it and downplay it to death. A well deserved punishment, I say.

That would be a great way to double hardware sales :)

They even blocked playing games offline? I'm unclear on this.

This is why physical gaming rules, they can brick our consoles and ban our accounts but not our physical games

I'm OK with Xbox Live bans in cases like this, but bricking complete consoles, even temporarily, is not at all OK. Stuff like this should be illegal. If some company wants justice, they should seek it through legal means instead of taking justice in their own hands.

Yes. Like the title says, they completely bricked the console for a period of time. They can do it and they have done it.

This is MS taking justice in their own hands. If they find a legal problem with this, as they should, they should take legal actions instead. As far as my morals go, no company should have the possibility to ruin the products they've sold without proper legal support. Terminating service contracts (e.g. Xbox Live) is entirely different though.

It sounds like they would do so if the user breaks any sort of rules, such as leaking information or pirating games. It seems terrible for MS to do that, but people shouldn`t be doing those things anyways. This seems to be trying to be painting MS in a bad light when the reason behind it is understandable.
