Forums - Gaming - "Disappearing" JRPG Series in Home Console (Console Space 5-6th Generation)

I wouldn't consider Xenosaga dead as opposed to just...finished. The game had a complete saga of 3 games(a shame the 6 game epic fell through), but really the series is complete. Would I want a 4th game? Yes. But for all intents and purposes the series is over.

Still remains one of the most bittersweet endings I've ever seen.

Oh I didn't know that series ended with the third one. Given nothing is truly over. Still I remember playing the first one and found it to be excellent. However when 2 and 3rd came around (I bought them), I think I got distracted with school. Plus out of the whole list, I think that is one of the most unlikely to see sequel. However it would be awesome to see it HD Remastered.

Added that part in.

When you say Shin Megami Tensei, do you mean mainline?

What's that picture in your sig from if you don't mind me asking.

Fire Emblem if.

I would rather a remaster/remake of Xenogears to be honest. If they improved the second disc by adding the missing planned content and made the game with at the very least Sixth Generation level visuals without the crappy controls/camera/platforming it would possibly be in my top 5 favorite JRPGs.

There is also King's Field but since Demon Souls & Dark Souls 1 &2 are spiritual successors you can skip it too.

Here is why thread is still not accurate:

Shining is accurate example of a JRPG series migrating away from consoles. The last Shining game on a console was on PS2. Since then handheld.

How can wild arms be disappearing from consoles when more than half its series is on consoles? There has been no wild arms since X Fire. We cant say it disappeared from consoles when there are no new installments to prove that.

What you really want to say is "dormant JRPG series". That still Wouldn't be accurate... Legend of Mana was not ment to be a its own series, its a installment of the series. Mana has had many mainline installments since then

Or maybe the lastest "JRPG console releases"

Is this really worthy of argument?

Absolutely. The original thread title was Dead JRPG series. That was about 90% true. Legend of Legaia and Shadow Hearts are the only legimate dead Ip's. The rest of those have had sequels (just not where the op wants them) or spiritual successors. To flat out deny the existence of a installment just because its not where you want or you pretty generize and say most handheld versions suck is ugh. Mainline console installments can suck too. Are we going to pretend they dont exist? X Fire was better than the last 2 WA's. VP DS was also great game. 3rd Birthday had a absolutely horrendous anime story, game was aswesome though.

We want to see our JRPG's back on consoles, me included, but the way we throw dead or even disappearing around in here is wrong. DQ9, VP: CoP, suikoden DS, All the mana, and shining ext. They exist. Its ok to 5 6 7 years for next installment people.

What this thread is really saying is "This is the last time this series was on a console"  minus XENOSAGA,PHANTASY STAR and SHINING FORCE, where I dont think he knows those ended and got spiritual successors. They didnt die or disappear.

You might want to add Growlanser, Arc The Lad, SaGA and Sakura Wars (unless the Wii port counts as a new entry)

How I miss Suikoden, this list is the reason I'm not interested in the PS4...

Growlanser I don't know much about, so you have to quickly fill me in. I will add Arc The Lad and research SaGA. Sakura Wars I will say counts with the Wii Port, however that as well might have disappeared home console space.

Growlanser is/was a series from Atlus, 6 games released for home consoles (5 of them for the PS2) with an RTS style of combat and multiple endings based on your relationship with the rest of the characters. We didn't get some of the entries, but 3 games out of 6, with a fourth released in the west for PSP, ain't that bad.

Will add that in, any word on new installments of the franchise?

Hmm, might add that in, it fits the cateria I established.

Well, one of the reasons all these JRPG's disappeared was the home console situation last gen. The market shifted alot towards more generic western tastes with the early sucess of the 360.
With the PS4 now looking set to dominate this gen, all these titles get a renewed chance to return. Never with high development values though.
Theres a few series with good potencial to make a comeback if well handled. The formulas of the Wild Arms series, the Breath of fire series (if capcom gave one), Chrono, Legaia (combat needs to evolve alot), Shemue (the world is ready for it now) and Shinig Force (Fire emblem is doing massively well, i dont know why SEGA is this clueless and only aims the games at the japanese market) all could work today.

If i had to take a pick of all those, i would definitly pick Grandia. Its the one in better conditions to make a comeback in the sense that theres clear demand and their combat system is legendary. The visual style of Ragnarok Odyssey was very similar to Grandia aswell, so aslong as theres a will, there certainly are ingredients to make a new one if GungHo wants.

I would love a Suikoden comeback aswell, but yeah... not gonna happen. Not while Konami is a thing.
Other cases are stories than ran their course. Arc the lad twilight was one of three extra sequals the franchise got. Arc the lad was the story of Arc. It ended with the second game. The series was dragging itself ever since because it couldnt ever achieve the same legendary status of the first 2 games.

Xenosaga... was finished. The only reason we may see it as not finished is because we know there is an episode 4 before Xenogears. But i imagine this episode is the past mentioned on Xenogears, so we kind of know where it was heading. Episode 6 would be the big mistery. Either that or maybe episode 4 is Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Once i play i will know better.

Someone mentioned YS. The next game is already coming to PS4 and the series never stoped having next installments, so its quite alive and well.

SMT is another series that is alive and well even if it shifted a bit to the Persona sub-series as its biggest one. Its coming on consoles and theres that SMTxFE thing coming to the Wii U aswell. I think the series is doing well aswell.
