the only thing they nailed was the marketing.

Sigh...

Marketing means a lot. We know that. BBH does a far better job than Deutsch. Branding power means a lot as well. But marketing and branding alone doesn't make a success. Just look at Microsoft's billion dollar marketing budgets for Zune, Windows Phone, Surface, etc.

Sony actually did a clever job in building the PS4 regarding both hardware and software. Furthermore, the popularity wasn't simply handed to them. They made a large number of right choices including $100 cheaper than the competition at launch, stronger specs than the competition, fast and fluid OS and shorter download times than the competition, features like PS Now, share play and remote play, no blocking of used games, no daily online check required, no mandatory camera, vast improved controller, great design (slick, yet internal power brick and user-replaceable hd), history of strong 1st party (10+ prominent inhouse dev studios) and 3rd party library (unrivaled range from Destiny to Yooka-Laylee to niche JRPGs), etc.

Do you really believe that marketing was the "only" factor in PS4's success? :S

I can't understand how people think that marketing alone is responsible for console success. I'm sure those who have actually not tried gaming on hardware can seriously end up with such weird notion relating to what articles stir up. But that audacity!

Nope. They did 2 things right.

1. Price.

2. Hype behind Watch Dogs and Destiny.

That is all.

Except that price is no longer an advantage and Watch Dogs and Destiny hype died months and months ago. Strange that PS4 still sells a lot more than the competition, isn't it? I am not sure if you are serious.

That Sony will win by a nose. Or that after MS release in tier 2 countries and China it will pass ps4.

That "by a nose" comment was obviously globally in the US.

Even that would be a Mr. Burns nose... 15% is not a insignificant amount.

What would you say about the people who were hopping on tier 2 and china?

My point was coming from a perspective of their continued success. They deserved the initial sales and success as they capitalized on Microsofts blunder and got a good head start. Though now those first 2 points don't matter as much. The better launch perception only last for a little while or at least it should as after a few months customer should wonder what now? In terms of newer offerings and experiences for consumers both Microsoft and Sony have been about equal, but Sony keeps selling better and that's not because of slightly better resolution on multiplats.

Being cheaper from the start should not keep sony ahead when the xbox one is cheaper now and has been on equal footing with sony in terms of a lot of things. Sony started off doing more and deserving their success but now it seems like they aren't doing anything spectacular in comparison to Microsoft to warrant the continued lead over them in weekly and monthly sales.

Open your eyes. A generation isn't made of a recent months. It's made of the entire history from start to finish.

If Sony started better than MS, MS doesn't catch up by running the same speed as them. They have to run twice as fast just to even have a chance of cactching up.

I have never seen a race, where one guys messes up his start, and then catches up because he's running the same speed as him, that's not how anything in the real world works.

The only way the current situation doesn't make sense, is if you ignore everything before this year.

Let me simply this even further:

If Sony isn't doing anything spectacular in comparison to Microsoft, a statement that doesn't make sense considering Microsoft is the one trying to catch up but i digress,

THEN IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR MS TO MAGICALLY CATCH UP, AND THE ENTIRE SITUATION MAKES ABSOLUTE SENSE,

IF MS WANTS TO DO AS GOOD AS SONY WITH PS4, THEY NEED TO BE AT LEAST TWICE AS GOOD, not basically even.

If one guy gets 5 apples in the beginning and the other person only gets 2 at the beginning, Is anyone going to act suprise when the other guy has a 3 apple lead on the other even though they have both been getting one apple every week? No.

What in my post eludes to me thinking a generation was made in a couple of months? Please point that out.

That whole race analogy does not really work here I can make plenty of analogies aout people getting on equal footing or ahead while just deciding to do just as much work as their competitors or less with shady tactics. Microsoft does not need to be twice as good as sony in my opinion to be on equal footing with sony and my point never was that they should be able to pass them while giving the same amount of effort. My whole point from the get-go wasnt that microsoft deserves to be winning it's more that sony isn't doing a whole lot to keep the lead they have its just sort of happening, its ridiculous honestly.

Here -> "My whole point from the get-go wasnt that microsoft deserves to be winning it's more that sony isn't doing a whole lot to keep the lead they have its just sort of happening, its ridiculous honestly. "

The only way for "people getting on equal footing or ahead while just deciding to do just as much work" to happen is if what ever caused the disparity never happened.

So either A. The generation is a couple of months

or B. This is a race, so to speak.

Its simply a matter of basic math.

You admit that Sony had a better start. So it is unless you ignore that start, then you can catch up. And there are no Analogies that you could imagine that don't ignore the start.

It's not simple math when thers so many factors involved that could heavily or slightly skew results and we don't know the metrics for those type of things in any accurate sense.

And your point that eldued to me thinking a gen was in a short span was in the post after I could have posted about it?

that point really holds no weight to me lol. As a lot of people from the 360 stuck with the xbox one because a lot of their friends were going there because it was their preferred system in general form the previous gen. there really o metric fo that point to work either way As I see alot of people who stuck with the xbox one regardless of it's opening blunder because their friends were going there anyway. We knew the online play was a big thing last gen the fact that its more relevent and is growing doesnt really drive home anything in the grand scheme last gen is where it really sprouted this gen is just a continuation.

Yes, and the Xbox One is selling very well.  It is ahead of the 360, which is one of the best selling systems ever.

A lot isn't a number.  So it isn't a lot->PS4 is equal to a lot ->XBO.  The reality is that more went to PS4 than XBO.

I'm not sure what you are talking about online.

What I mean by that is, it's a big reason to have the same system as your friends.

Let's suppose a person named Jim.

Jim likes CoD, and likes playing with his friends.

6 out of his 10 friends are playing on PS4.

Which console does Jim get?

Probably PS4 because more of his friends have it.

The reality is that most gamers are Jim.

And it works both ways I don't see that being a driving factor in th ps4's lead at all honestly.

For 2 reasons imo.

1: Though branding isn't everything, a "PlayStation" will in almost every case sell better worldwide than an equally priced and equally strong "Xbox".

2: PS4 was cheaper AND stronger than XB1 at launch and the general perception among gamers is that multiplats perform far better on PS4. Among the mainstream customers and soccer moms price is more important (they rarely know anything about specs) and that's why price reduced XB1s fly of the shelves on black friday and in the holidays.

Seems some people have slightly limited gaming interests for saying the consoles have no games. I can't keep up! 30 physical games and 42 digital.

I've been keeping a reasonably close eye on the console but nothing has spoken to me yet. I don't think Bloodborne's for me and the handful of other games that have caught my attention (The Last of Us, Rayman Legends, Trine 2, Terraria, Child of Light, The Walking Dead) are all available elsewhere.

Anyway, while I think Sony had much better ideas for PS4 at launch than XO did, I think the bulk of what has got them this far is branding and marketing. In terms of software, thus far I don't think their lineup's been anything special. It certainly hasn't been very unique.

no. As long as they are in a distant 2nd or 3rd they will be better about it. Look at the 360. The XB was clobered by the PS2 so they went out their and made a good system for a reasonable price. The 360 was good for gamers in general.

To MS games were never the reason they got into the console biz, and Xbox fans need to remember that. To them its always been about taking over the TV in each home.

You speak as if you know domination is a good thing, for Xbox and Nintendo fans I will again disagree and tell you it's not, it never makes them "better", it doesn't make them the best, it does however make them knwon for being mediocre when we look at sales and brand image, them staying in 2nd-3rd place is never good, you are sadly mistaken in believing 2nd-3rd place is good for them, that's a plain and simple view from one who exhibits a defeatist mentality, you should know by now that hardly many want second or third place, mostly everyone would want to be on top if they could, no one neters a race with a desire to become 2nd or 3rd, only those who think they are already defeated before the race evena began would qualify for that.

Let me just point out that while you think getting womped by the PS2 made the 360 a better system, what about the failure rates, what about having less hardware, what about the fact that it;s not getting supported as much, what about the fact PS3 has gained it;s edge over it, in the end Sony didn't make the 360 better, oh sure it got multiplats but where are those currently as we talk?, oh they're on Sony's system, that means completely zip to XB1 and 360, Sony dominating currently isn't making either system "better", it just means only one system is being better than the rest even though two of them shot themselves in the foot and now can't catch up but no one wants to admit that because that would make the "sony does everything better by default so said jesus christ" a fallacy.

I honestly don't care to quibble with people who think one party dominating the rest is a good thing, I swear one of these days I can't wait until some other country comes into such power to break everyone else's backs and then you'll see how that works out because dominating everyone is never good, just look at nvidia vs AMD, not good, never good.

I'm done with this, I don't see a point in carrying on in the thread after people fail to notice domination is never a good thing, those who only agree with domination are those who stand on the winning team, the one who's got everyone else under the heel of their boot and it's disgusting.
