Forums - Sony - Konami wants 1 Million Sales of MGS4 in Japan Alone + Other Info

no MGS game has ever sold 1 million in Japan. And according to another article I read, the popularity of the series is actually decreasing in japan.

Japan is the only territory in which MGS sales have reamined consistent. According to this very site, MGS2 sold ~850k in Japan, and MGS3 sold ~10k more, finishing at ~860k.

OT:  I think this prediction is insane, but if any game deserves to break 1 million in Japan, it's MGS4. :P

I don't think thats true. DW6 has 400k sold, and I think DW5 sold 780k.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

 DW5 sold ~910k in Japan.

Konami wants the impossible—they want huge sales on a dead/failure console. Even Final Fantasy XIII would have a hard time reaching 1m on the PS3's current Japanese user base. The PS3 has had several games that are even bigger in Japan than Metal Gear, yet none of them have even reached 500k. I don't know what makes Konami think that Metal Gear Solid 4 will get a near 50% attach rate when even Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games don't even get that. Metal Gear just isn't a huge IP in Japan, and even if it was, the PS3's user base is not big enough for those type of sales.

There has not been a single PS3 game released in Japan that has sold to 50% of the users that a PS2 game in the series has ... Now, I think there is a remote chance that Metal Gear Solid 4 could match the sales of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 in its lifetime but I doubt it will make it to 1 Million anytime soon.

DMC-650k
DMC2-550k
DMC3-350k(+20k+50k between the two special editions in the database, not sure if that is any overlap)
DMC4-280k
Hasn't met 50% of the first, but it has exceeded it for 2 and 3.

Disgaea 2-150k
Disgaea 3-90k

Dynasty Warriors 2-340k
Dynasty Warriors 6-400k
That one is a bit of a stretch since 3, 4, and 5 sold significantly more, but it complies with the 50% of a PS2 game in the series parameters.

Ya know, technically MGS2/3 did break 1 mil. in Japan, if you include Substance and Subsistence.

I see no reason for Konami to be confident in this regard. This is not a major popular series within Japan. This series has never sold over a million copies within Japan. They are making this game for a console with a tenth of the total install base of the console that couldn't sell over a million copies on the first three attempts in Japan. So I wonder what strange confluence of mystical energies is going to bring this about. I think there is a serious problem in Konami. Either they are incredibly deluded about their chances, or are inventing fanciful tales for the public.

I now extend an open challenge to anyone who is saying this title will sell over a million copies in Japan within the first month on the market. I challenge you to a bet. The stakes 1000vg$. I bet this title will not sell a million copies within japan during its first month on the shelves. I would go for a longer period, but honestly I am not patient enough to wait twelve months to finish off a serious bet like this. All you have to do is say you accept. Simple enough proposition if your so confident.

The title sells a million or above and you get 1000vg$. The title sells less, and your a laughing stock. I think your confidence is a facade, and nothing more. Time to lay down a little humility. You guys are so confident that its going to make titles like Brawl look pathetic then lets see you put that vg$ where your mouths are.

Diabloz if you cannot tell I am calling you out, or anyone else foolhardy enough to take this bet. I bet you will flinch and not even respond.

I don't think anyone will take your bet. Although if it was me, I would have proposed 700-900k for the first month as the bet threshold.

You are all forgetting that there are still no uber-hyped AAA games out for the PS3 yet and less so that appeal even a little to the Japanese. So there is no competition from other games yet.
So unless you bought the console for the BR player, or are not rich enough to buy it then i believe many PS3 owners will buy it only because of the lack of alternatives...
Lifetime sales may reach 1m especially if the bundle is not phased out soon after launch. (would you buy the consloe on its own or with the game for the same price?)

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

there's no way mgs 4 will reach even 300k in its first week and 1mln in ps3 lifespan.
mgs 1 - first week: 349,921 l total: 780k in japan l in launch week there was 12.5mln psx consoles in japan
mgs 2 - first week: 469,683 l total: 850k in japan l in launch week there was more than 6mln ps2 consoles in japan
mgs 3 - first week: 493,827 l total: 860k l in japan in launch week there was almost 18mln ps2 consoles in japan
mgs 4 - during mgs 4 launch week there will be about 2.2 mln ps3 in japan(and there is probably 200-250k used only as a BR players)
so there is no chance that mgs 4 will hit 1mln in japan.

I've never seen logic thrown out of a thread so fast. Why are people pretending like the history of MGS sales or the PS3 install base doesn't matter? This is a sales site, predictions are made on facts and statistics, not fanboy wishing.

That said, I don't think it's going to happen. Franchises more popular than Metal Gear in Japan have been hit by the 500k gimp. So far I haven't seen a convincing argument about why Metal Gear is special and exempt.
