Id rather just buy a retron 5

awesome now games can live on forever on cartridges

That's cool and all, but this isn't even directly competing with the Retron 5.

And yet,  entirely relevant. 

Would rather play legit retro than buy into a cashgrab on retro "style"  games. 

Can't agree on just calling them cashgrabs. You wouldn't call Shovel Knight a cashgrab, or Pillars of Eternity or any game that harkons to older genres. And if people legitmatly enjoy those games on cartridges, what's not to like, it's a matter of choice after all. That and the Retron 5 isn't exactly "clean" in the way it plays old games.

I can't see how anyone would expect something like this to be successful when something like the OUYA, which is far more progressive and had an extremely successful kickstarter campaign, fell flat on its face. It's like people are forgetting why carts and wires were abandoned in the first place.

You think Wii U support is bad? Look at the OUYA, then imagine that each of those relatively poor indie devs, who are the only guys making those retro style games, would have to pay to produce expensive carts that would never sell because they're also expensive to buy on a system that would likely never sell much to begin with because, unlike the Retron 5, it has no software that merits anyone buying it instead of it's superior alternatives like consoles and PCs.

People forget that the only reason these guys are making retro-likes is because they're cheap to make and cheap to distribute thanks to being distributed digitally. If they had money to support something like this, they wouldn't be making indie retro-likes in the first place. They'd be making more expensive games and still distributing them digitally.

I might buy it, if it plays N64 cartridges.

The Ouya wanted to be a haven for indie games on android, while android in itself was already such a place. They aimed for a market already occupied. The Retro VGS wants to be the system where the indie dev's, mayby after releasing their game on android or PC release their game on cartridge.  There is also not really a risk for them, since the cost to manufacture is about 8$ (for small quantities), and you can easily sell games for 15-30$ and have a tidy margin .

As for the game machine i'd want to see a release schedule before putting my money down.

I actually hope a "next gen" console will use cartridges. Optical discs are really becoming too small in capacity and their transfer speeds are atrocious for modern games, resulting in long loading times and both to the necessity to install games first on consoles. Cartridges don't have those limitations, and their higher prices is getting offset by the rapidly dropping prices of the necessary flash memory.
