OT: The plethora a workarounds for this is incredible... equally incredible is their reason for this.

Optional VC for friends.
Optional VC for online random people.

The only best way.

I was gonna buy this game, but if that's the case, forget it.

When did you say you were gonna buy it as it was online multiplayer focused from the get go. And yes MK8 has voice chat with friends while in the lobby.

How am I supposed to know that? It's not my job to market this game to myself. So how am I supposed to know it's only gonna be online only?

Yeah well, thats true, huh, but the problem here was, that the cutscenes got linked before the game came out, so millions of people watched the cutscenes befroe the game came out, idk also i really dont know the real reason or the biggest reason why theres no story mode, but theres probably a reason behind it.

Leaks aren't new either, heck it even happened to SSB4. The real reason is time constraint, budget, and/or laziness.

Or maybe because they are working on an Amiibo game in a similar fashion to Skylanders and they thought a story mode in Smash would take away from that. Just a theory.

Are you telling me you buy games without knowing anything about them lol?

They didn't need to have a story, could of been just like Melee's Adventure mode, but let's hope E3 proves you right about that amiibo game.

Yup. Read: No More Heroes, it's sequel, The Conduit, Red Steel, Hyrule Warriors, The Last Story. Just to name a few.

Wow. I can't believe they're still doing this outdated online stuff. I have now lost the only bit of interest I had in this game. How are you suppose to communicate with your friends online without voice or at least keyboard inputs?

Skype or Team Speak.

How are you going to connect to people you get randomly match-made with?  Call timeout while everyone exchanges skype userames?  Frantically fire off requests between deaths?

"having a friendly in-game environment was more important than being able to plan and coordinate with teammates using voice chat."

That really says a lot, and this is part of the reason why these IP's will never live up to the biggest franchises in more mainstream genres. There are plenty of reasons for all sorts of censorship and/or protection in games but this is taking it too far; there are several other ways of doing it, some which have already been mentioned in this thread.

The key is if you design the game with this in mind. If 343i decided to drop voice chat from Halo 5 at the last minute, the game would be an inferior experience for lacking it. If you build it with the idea that you were never going to have it, however...

Well, we'll see how well it works.

Honestly though, who really does this?

I used to play a lot of shooters on Xbox live. Few people used it, and those who did were often stereotype screaming kids. And if I met some people who talked it didn't really result in many tactical duscussions. I stopped using it eventually, as did all my friends who owned a 360.

Sure they could have added voice chat, but I honestly don' see the added value for randomly matched people. While I'll use skype, I do agree that char with friends would have made sense.
