In my experience that's the case with the majority of games that hit near universal acclaim (doubly so if it's an exclusive). Most of it can usually be avoided by both parties acknowledging that they're stating an opinion, not an absolute (regardless to if that opinion puts them in a majority or minority).

CoD isn't half as bad as people make it out to be. In LoL ever third player is a major asshole, on CoD every thirtieth player is a major asshole. There's also some fighter games with a toxic tone, because of natural skillbasedness of the game, and the one vs one nature. If you play against a good player, and you're not that good at the game, you can be damn sure they'll make fun off you.

I would have to say Sonic. Call of Duty fanboys are annoying but Sonic fanboy are just really fucking disturbing.

Last three games have been 90+ meta, and two of the most awarded games in history are uncharted 2 and The last of us. They also made the hugely successful Crash series. I mean that is fairly impressive. That is Nintendo quality impressive.

The Diablo 3 PC crowd used to be pure vitriol. Reaper of Souls improved things, but every fuqing day it's "drrrppp diablo 2 was better."
