I figure we (or at least us grown adults who grew up on Nintendo) would see the patterns. They don't change.

Nintendo does what they feel is good for gamers. Fan feedback is loosely listened to at best, 3rd party demands don't concern them, competition and their agendas/console specs don't concern them, online networks are deliberately held back for their family image due to censorship (to protect the kids from online toxic behavior), core gamer centric marketing doesn't concern them.

They literally just make what they and they alone feel is right and put it out there.

That said, they still are responsible for making many timeless classics, but even current devotees of Nintendo have to see the flaws that come with the good.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

For me, Nintendo is cool. Mario is cool, Link is cool, Splatoon is cool... "Cool" is a relative concept. If you mean "attractive to all the gamers" maybe not. I have met a lot of people who don't play Nintendo games because they are kiddie, and they are afraid of losing their "macho" image. More than you would think...

There are currently 32, 1st party Nintendo titles over 1 million, 16 over 3 million, 7 over 5 million and 3 over 10 million. Alot of these games are still selling well and there are a bunch of games yet to release that will make the list. Nintendo games sell great despite not being "cool".

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Nintendo could stand to score a few more gritty or mature titles that are action packed. I still think Nintendo is pretty 'cool' tho.

well said. I guess you could throw me in the devoted player, but you're right Nintendo does what they want to do, and i actually respect that, wish more businesses had that mentality along with some intent to be wholesome to a degree. With that as you said, Nintendo does have a flaws, but I'm starting to notice that they play "dumb" on purpose.

Nintendo's problem is they don't have a flagship "cool" IP. Metroid does not cut it sales wise.

Activision had Call of Duty (10+ million seller) and Destiny.

EA has Madden NFL, FIFA, and Battlefield.

Rockstar/Take 2 has GTA.

Capcom has Resident Evil.

Square-Enix has Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider.

Sony has Uncharted and God Of War.

Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War.

2K Sports has NBA 2K.

Ubi Soft has Assassin's Creed.

Warner has Batman: Arkham series.

Nintendo doesn't have that tier of IP. Bayonetta is maybe a 400k-500k seller on the Wii U, Metroid ... even at the height of the Wii craze, Metroid Prime 3 barely scraped past 1 million sold ... that's just not good enough.

Nintendo has no credibility in this arena. They have a bunch of niche IP and then they have Zelda which has been cartoon-shaded 3/4 last console instalments, which is not going to appeal to the crowd that buys the above franchises.

That's why I'd push for them to take back the Bond franchise and make some high quality games, I think that could be a brand leader for them, but they'll likely never do something like that.

Funding obscure/niche Japanese titles like Bayonetta, Devil's Third, Fatal Frame, etc. while not bad, is a drop in the bucket for that type of broad audience though. Just not good enough.

I'm praying for the coolest grittiest trailer ever from Devil's 3rd. That will be a instant invitation to the cool table.

Well, it's difficult to do that with childish looking characters. Games like Metroid, xenoblade, bayonetta, zombiU help to dispell that perception but there's the rest of the nintendo library that begs to differ on that.

Outside of nintendo's fanbase, would this look cool or appealing as a game to a male between the ages of 25 and up?
