Nintendo's problem is they don't have a flagship "cool" IP. Metroid does not cut it sales wise.
Activision had Call of Duty (10+ million seller) and Destiny.
EA has Madden NFL, FIFA, and Battlefield.
Rockstar/Take 2 has GTA.
Capcom has Resident Evil.
Square-Enix has Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider.
Sony has Uncharted and God Of War.
Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War.
2K Sports has NBA 2K.
Ubi Soft has Assassin's Creed.
Warner has Batman: Arkham series.
Nintendo doesn't have that tier of IP. Bayonetta is maybe a 400k-500k seller on the Wii U, Metroid ... even at the height of the Wii craze, Metroid Prime 3 barely scraped past 1 million sold ... that's just not good enough.
Nintendo has no credibility in this arena. They have a bunch of niche IP and then they have Zelda which has been cartoon-shaded 3/4 last console instalments, which is not going to appeal to the crowd that buys the above franchises.
That's why I'd push for them to take back the Bond franchise and make some high quality games, I think that could be a brand leader for them, but they'll likely never do something like that.
Funding obscure/niche Japanese titles like Bayonetta, Devil's Third, Fatal Frame, etc. while not bad, is a drop in the bucket for that type of broad audience though. Just not good enough.
