Peter Moore might have made some questionable statements. He might have done questionable things. But goddamn, he made me like the Xbox brand; and that's something no other Microsoft executive has done.
Sorry Phil. Cool guy and all that, but you're no match for him. Nice PR person, but you hardly ever get the job done.
Also, this made me laugh, although I don't know if it is 100% true.

Though if it's true, that TSA agent is kind of an idiot, he didn't really give away Shenmue, both Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 still released on Dreamcast, Shenmue 2 on Xbox was a port that happened a year after it released on Dreamcast, it's not like Shenmue 2 was an Xbox exclusive or something. Peter Moore really was something special though, none of Xbox's heads have managed to achieve the level of applause that Peter Moore recieved at E3, he pretty much got standing ovations from the crowd. He really was loved by Xbox fans. Phil has some big shoes to fill. Phil always kinds of comes off as fake to me, like he has a persona he puts on just for the public that's completely different from how he actually acts. He honestly kind of looks like a used car salesman. I never got that impression from Peter Moore though. |
I don't doubt Phil likes gaming, and I bet he (sometimes) does say genuine things. My problem is that he does just that: talk, but hardly ever achieves something he proposes. Moore, on the other hand, aside from the ocassional tatoo and some stupid comment about japanese people playing mahjong, made some agressive deals, tried localizing games and overall wanted to give Xbox a distinctive identity: he was hired to steal Playstation marketshare and so he did. He didn't even hesitate recommending Nintendo products either, all in a very natural fashion despite being, at the core, a simple bussinessman contracted by Microsoft. I can't be certain of this, but I think some of those MS/Ninty collaboration were product of his work (like Blue Dragon on DS, for example).
Now, I can understand some dislikeness over him due to his very agressive nature, but as I said before, I probably wouldn't have liked Xbox if it wasn't for him in the first place. I can't say the same about Phil. He's not making me want an Xbox, at all.
I love him too! He's been a really good boss so far. Very close to the fans and he knows what people want. Games, not TV. Really hope he stays as long as possible and that he keeps making these awesome decisions.
Add me on Xbox: DWTKarma
What can Phil achieve in about a year into his legacy as the head of Xbox?
If you wanna hear a used car salesman on E3 stage tune up to Shawn Layden.
Kaz Hirai is my personal hero. :P
It's a shame we don't see him at PlayStation events anymore. But he's still kicking ass at Sony events! Anyway, about Phil: I don't know this guy to be quite honest. I mean, I read the name pretty often, but never saw him on stage. He can't be worse than Don Mattrick though. That guy was a dick, I'm sorry, there's no denying it!

I find Spencer, Iwata and Hirai all to be good guys overall. Spencer does seem like her genuinely cares about his products and fans, that is not all that common in the entertainment industry.

When Steve Ballmer hired Peter Moore he was frustrated with the fact that the original Xbox was stalled at 23% market share in the US, and even lower worldwide. The 360 was designed under Peter Moore, which as you know went on to take a significant chunk of Playstation's marketshare. Peter Moore made some of the biggest deals in the history of Xbox, including the GTA IV deal and the Final Fantasy XIII deal (though the Final Fantasy XIII deal was announced after he had already left Xbox). He also promoted games with tatoos, it doesn't get much cooler than that. |
So he was responsible for RRoD. And taking market share from PS3 was as easy as PS4 taking it back from Xb one. Are you saying 360 would have succeeded in sales to the same degree as if PS3 didn't trip over itself? Also, a good 15+ million of 360's sales can be attributed to Kinect, which had nothing to do with Peter Moore.
So basically, he was in charge of releasing a console with a very high failure rate that caused MS to have to offer extended warantees for free, and cost them enough money to sink many businesses. And by the good luck of Sony shooting PS3 in the foot managed to take away market share in the first half of the generation, and he announced games by tattoo.
