Forums - Nintendo - Retro Studios should be Nintendo's Naughty Dog: Journey to the West

@OP - If you have seen ND's 30 year anniversary then you will understand Sony and its philosophy. It didn't started with Uncharted. When PS2 was released Sony realized gamers are growing up. So they catered games around it. In Jak and daxter 1 jak used echo and in the third part he started using machine guns. Back in 2011 Sony told its internal studios to focus on mature type of games. Yes. They will still make games for younger audiences but grown up gamers are their main focus.

And another mistake of Nintendo is not to adapt. Back in 90s when donkey kong came out it was unique. But in front of ori and the blind forest, tearway or puppeteer it pales in comparison. Nintendo no longer has USP or unique selling proposition.

Put it to the test and make a poll to see which game is liked the best.

DKC: TF is the ninth best selling game on the Wii U (and best selling IP that doesn't have Mario or Zelda in it). It wasn't a huge mistake to make this game.

They should make a new IP next though.

The opinion of this forum doesn't necessarily represent the actual score. Plus metacritic wise and unique charm wise the abovementioned games outclasses donkey Kong in every aspect. After playing ori and the blind forest I can safely say with proper funding small studios with talent can outclass big budget games.

That's Metroid's role. Metroid Prime Trilogy feels more like a western game. To do an Uncharted game, just make the Prime games in third person view, greater complex overworlds and try to find a balance between the solitary Primes 1 and 2, and the Full of crew stories in Prime 3 and Other M.

If you believe Metroid is too niche, them something similar to Metroid and Mass Effect will work.

It's not Metroid's role. Metroid isn't even close to a mainstream franchise. I love Metroid far more than Uncharted, but the accessability, easiness, and twitchiness of Uncharted lends itself far more to a mainstream audience than the lonely, patient, and more methodical gameplay of Metroid.

Lol, want me to quote some of these reviews DKC: TF got? Please stop using metacritic as a source of 100% accuracy. One review was complaining he died 20 times in a level of world 1. And the GS review...So awful. And metacritic gives more weight to GS than other review sites... Clearly the people playing think it's better than the critics (userscore of 8.9). Tearaway also has a userscore of 8.9, Puppeteer 8.4 and Ori 8.7. So don't even dare use the argument that only Wii U userscores aren't trolled on metacritic. ;)

Those games won't sell anywhere near DKC: TF on a failing conso:le. Guess DKC has more charm than Puppeteer, Ori and Tearaway afterall. ;)

Not that you can compare these games anyway. Never heard about Puppeteer, but Ori is a Metroidvania game and Tearaway has this Paper Mario art style which affects the gameplay.

Retro are a skeleton crew nowadays when compared  to their past, you know. That's why they make 2D DK games instead of more high budget material.

After Metroid Prime ended, huge numbers of devs left to form and join other teams.

To turn Retro into what you suggest would necessitate a massive hiring programme which would also change the studio itself. Should they? I definitely say yes.

But understand that asking modern Retro to pull a Naughty Dog is like asking the Animal Crossing team to make an engine surpassing Unreal 4.0 in capabilities.

I think that this idea that the crew that left somehow lessened what Retro is now is a fallacy. They make DK because they like it, not because they can't handle something else. What ground breaking games came from any of the studios that those guys went to, anyway? Some formed a team who's most notable game is a 2D Batman game for portable systems, one works at id who's done nothing notable since, and another went to 343, a team that made what many consider to be the worst Halo game in the series.

There's a couple of them working at Naughty Dog, but Retro hired some developers from Uncharted 3 as well.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Lol, that's extremely ironic. (I knew about Retro's hires, but not ND's)

I certainly agree to an extent, Nintendo needs western developers to make western focused games.

Right now their are 3 major western 1st/2nd party developers for Nintendo, Retro Studios, Next Level Games & Monster Games, all of these studios have just been tasked to revive older Nintendo ip (Metroid/Donkey Kong for Retro, Punch Out/Luigi's Mansion for NLG, Excite series/Pilotwings for Monster).

Nintendo should make this their western studio trifecta that develop more western oriented games.

Retro Studios should honestly be have two teams and could make a western RPG, perhaps revive Raven Blade while the other team makes a first person shooter in the style of Perfect Dark or Timesplitters.

Next Level Games has a long history of sports games, they could become the Nintendo Sports team, not Mario Sports or an EA Sports competitor but games that a nice middle ground between those two types of play styles.

Monster Games is mostly known for racing games, perhaps they could make Nintendo's version of Need for Speed or a sim racer.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

@Samus - Not liking metaceitic when its not in your favor and liking when its in your favor is kinda deceiving yourself. If DLTF bad scores for difficulty then bloodborne should have gotten even worse. That's a different topic.

Anyways retro studio isn't like its past self and you just can't develop a big respected studio in a few years even if you hire the best developers and put a lot of money. Studio culture, its ability to pass through changes and ability to retain talents defines a studio. In past people have left ND and made their own studios. Ready at dawn was formed by ND members. As Jason Ruben said in ND's 30 year anniversary video you just can't make a successful studio. With years of effort in turns into reality.

I think Ninten letting Retro do their own thing may bear some really impressive games for them, especially if they let them cater to the west. Retro has proven they can make good games. Now that`s if Ninten will let them, or keep off any suggestions for them to use their IPs. We all know how Ninten stepped in on them before. Just advice alone may be enough.

It`s also a good step, but I don`t think it would be enough to get attention from the western audiences. They likely need to pump out more western core games as well as more quality 3rd party games. If Retro pulled a LoU, it may be possible to shift Ninten to a good direction, but I think Ninten`s image is rooted too deep into people to switch that image quickly.

I do think Retro given free range may be a good start to changing things around for Ninten at least.

Good thread Spemanig. You write long stuff, but it`s always a worthwhile read.
