Retro are a skeleton crew nowadays when compared  to their past, you know. That's why they make 2D DK games instead of more high budget material.

After Metroid Prime ended, huge numbers of devs left to form and join other teams.

To turn Retro into what you suggest would necessitate a massive hiring programme which would also change the studio itself. Should they? I definitely say yes.

But understand that asking modern Retro to pull a Naughty Dog is like asking the Animal Crossing team to make an engine surpassing Unreal 4.0 in capabilities.

I think that this idea that the crew that left somehow lessened what Retro is now is a fallacy. They make DK because they like it, not because they can't handle something else. What ground breaking games came from any of the studios that those guys went to, anyway? Some formed a team who's most notable game is a 2D Batman game for portable systems, one works at id who's done nothing notable since, and another went to 343, a team that made what many consider to be the worst Halo game in the series.

There's a couple of them working at Naughty Dog, but Retro hired some developers from Uncharted 3 as well.
