We saw the ''huge''sales of mature third party games on wii...;)

I don't think that anyone is stupid enough to think that the reasons those games failed has anything to do with them being mature.

I think Ninten letting Retro do their own thing may bear some really impressive games for them, especially if they let them cater to the west. Retro has proven they can make good games. Now that`s if Ninten will let them, or keep off any suggestions for them to use their IPs. We all know how Ninten stepped in on them before. Just advice alone may be enough.

It`s also a good step, but I don`t think it would be enough to get attention from the western audiences. They likely need to pump out more western core games as well as more quality 3rd party games. If Retro pulled a LoU, it may be possible to shift Ninten to a good direction, but I think Ninten`s image is rooted too deep into people to switch that image quickly.

I do think Retro given free range may be a good start to changing things around for Ninten at least.

Good thread Spemanig. You write long stuff, but it`s always a worthwhile read.

I'm not expecting an instant shift. Like I said, it's only a first step, but an important and symbolic one. In a perfect world Retro will release this game sometime next year. Then, the NX would launch whenever it does with another exclusive western IP right off the bat. Then maybe six months later, and another six months later they release another. Swap one of these with a rerelease of Retro's game for the astounding amount of people who obviously wouldn't have bought the Wii U version. (Not that I condone this, just that it would be smart from a business POV) Four original western IP over the course of maybe 3 years, three coming from commissioned studios.

With this, Nintendo keeps that initial first wave hardcore audience right off the bat, and they buy the obligatory first wave of 3rd party games that hit the console. Once the companies see that there's an audience, more support the system, meaning more of the mainstream western audience have reason to buy it. That's how the perception shifts. This just gets the ball rolling.

If Retro could get a steady stream of their own original games that do the things you propose early into NX`s life, I agree that it would help get the momentum going to bring that western audience and the 3rd parties. It could work I think.

Actually I'm claiming its the IP that people have outgrown, not the company itself. I do still see Nintendo being able to turn things around. It just isn't happening yet.

What's more, your mortal kombat reference is irrelevant considering the games are NOT released on ninteo hardware but come to other consoles.

@Curl-6: mature themes have been around since self awareness. I'd be a fool to pretend Sony invented mature games (seriously how did you come to that conclusion from my post?) I'm merely suggesting that PS1 released when I was very young and impressionable. Since that time, the IPs that have come to the platform have matured parallel to my tastes as well. I wasn't a youngin that instantly dived into GTA.

@Zorg1000: I see your scenario as this - Disney is the brand. Pixar is a Dev team, Marvel is a Dev team, Disney animation, LucasArts etc. Saying Pixar needs to branch out from what they do is akin to saying infinity ward should branch out in what they do. Really we should be looking at the platform though, not the Dev team. Disney has multiple teams that deliver on a wide range of content aimed at a plethora of age groups. Nintendo has all these Dev teams but they don't explore new genres without making them, in my opinion childish.

I love smash, I love Mario kart, interested in the new LoZ and xenoblade looks sweet. Metroid is the only other title I find myself interested in though and a lot of that is just more of the same; not enough for me to warrant a purchase. I feel like these opinions are echoed by others too.

While I don't think that "outgrown" is the right word (you haven't outgrown it, you've fallen out of intrest with it), semantics don't really matter when the result is clear; you're not buying the Wii U because it doesn't provide you with enough games that interests you. For Nintendo, that's a big problem, because the majoraty of gamers have come to the same conclusion as you have.

The Disney example is the most pertinant one, and the one I was thinking of when righting this. I've always said that. Nintendo needs to be like Apple when it comes to hardware and firmware, and Disney when it comes to software. I tried to make it clear in the OP that the last thing Nintendo should do is not make the games that people are still buying their systems for. That being said, they need to expand. Not enough people are buying them because there are not enough games that appeal to the mass market, which is the west.

Maybe the game Retro makes isn't as serious as TLOU. Maybe it's rated T instead of M. The point isn't "Nintendo needs to make games for adults." The point is "Nintendo needs to make games specifically for the west." Disney has the Avengers. They had Pirates of the Carribian. None were rated R. Both were watched by all ages. But the movies sold to a wider audience than something like Brave. Nintendo needs their own Avengers and their own Pirates. Destiny is a rated T game. The point isn't to be "grown up," but to appeal to the mass market in gaming: the west.

And that's not to say that the game shouldn't be M rated or T rated. It's just that it isn't the point. Nintendo needs to start appealing to people like you, and starting with Retro is the best way to do it.

This trend towards more violence, sexuality, and coarse language in games was more of an industry wide trend than one specific to Playstation, that's all I'm saying.

That's not how it works though. What would actually happen is that the Retro games sell while the third party games get ignored. When Retro defines the standard for $60 software, then third party games (the usual half-baked ports because third parties don't believe the audience is worth the effort) will collect dust on store shelves and in bargain bins like they always do. Following that, third parties will declare that only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo systems and scale back the little support they gave the system in the first place. Because it's never the fault of third parties when third party software doesn't sell on a Nintendo system.

I think that that's an extremely pessemistic view that makes it seem like Nintendo isn't at fault at all for why third party games don't sell well on their platform. As long as the games are new, people in that audience will buy the first wave. There were good ports of games on the Wii U at launch that got ignored because no one in that audience saw any reason to buy it. With what I said, Nintendo will have, by that time, have already released one western exclusive on the Wii U, will have launched the NX with one, and will have anounced one to release within the launch window. That's a completely different landscape to be in at the launch of a system, and the third party games would do better overall as a result, because Nintendo will have nurtured the platform better towards those kinds of experiences.

Post launch, of course the games of lower quality would fall off, but the better ones would sell more consistantly for longer. When these guys compare data and see that the demographic is there, they'll work on better quality porting the next time around.

Retro Studios that made Metroid Prime is gone. Half of them left after MP3 and almost made that Mega Man game FPS. The rest left for 343 at MS after DK on Wii. Retro has now former Naughty Dog,id tech and Darksiders developers. It's a whole new crew so anyone that was involved with Raven Blade is gone. Nintendo should buy Next Level Games as another developer in the west. They are currently making a unnamed Wii U game.

Retro is a larger studio now as the moved to bigger offices with a bigger team so they can create some higher calibur games if they want to.

I never called you stupid.

Motion controls, lack of consistant and high quality western exclusive releases aimed for that demographic, and SD graphics to name a few.

I don't expect Retro to be able to release a steady stream of anything. They aren't big enough. Nintendo needs more than just Retro which is why I suggestion commisions early on for the NX, but what's important is that Retro hits this home run before the NX releases. The ball has to start rolling on the Wii U. That audience needs proof before the NX.

Not half, only 3 left after Prime 3. Only a handful left Retro overall. Retro is not the same as they were during the Prime days, but they still have many of those guys left. It's not a whole new crew. It's the equivilant of going to high school the year after the seniors graduate. Sure, there are a lot of freshmen and the seniors are gone, but there are still 3 years worth of upper classmen left. It's not suddenly a completely different school.
