Forums - Gaming - Onlive *Finally* Shutting Down; Sony buying a lot of their patents

Amazing to think SONY pretty much own the tech of the two biggest game-streaming competitors (If you don't include microsoft since they havent really started)

Seems like they've done a great job in securing their position in the cloud gaming business.

That's a shame, I was a fan of OnLive early on. But for whatever reason they couldn't acquire notable games.

I hope MS or Valve attempts a similar service. I'd like a streaming service that isn't limited to PS3 games.

Welp, RIP Onlive! Hopefully Sony/PSnow will not suffer the same fate

Fortunately sony doesn't need PSNow to be profitable early on as they can rely on traditional gaming revenue for profits for several more years yet. That means they can incubate streaming in a relatively safe environment and they can refine, evolve and innovate without risking financial ruin, if they are sensible.

Hopefully they have a 5 year plan to sustainable profitability from streaming which gives plenty of time to build the library, the userbase and the infrastructure.

But how will it handle VR? I think VR is going to be to big to do that. To much latency.

They have nearly a decade to figure that out.

Hope they will come out with a 4G PlayStation Handheld to take advantage of all of this streaming tech. Remote Play and PS Now worked perfectly when I tethered my Vita to the Z3. Would be optimal if I could just do this on one device, that had physical buttons, not a smartphone.

In any case, the future of PS Now and Remote Play looks very bright.

Sony really seem to be serious about this streaming games business, huh...

You have to embrace the future or else you'll end up like Nintendo...

Never heard of OnLive. But good for Sony, I guess.

This is Sony's long term plan. As they say one day we wont need consoles, we will all just be able to stream the games to our TVs, laptops, tablets, smartphones etc etc. Obviously PSNow in its current form is just the beggining, one day every new game will be available to purchase through this service day 1. They basically want to become a storefront on multiple devices, something that if successful will definitely bring in much higher profits.

Yes, and something that will also see my exit from modern gaming.

What did actually happen, they faced the need to replace obsolete hardware farms after nextgen happened, and decided to turn lights off instead.

Let this be lesson for those who buy icons instead of video games.
