Forums - Gaming - Onlive *Finally* Shutting Down; Sony buying a lot of their patents

Whenever I hear "digital is the future," I roll my eyes because it reminds me of all those other failed prognostications. While digital (either downloads or streaming) will continue being part of the future, it probably isn't the future of consoles. Maybe in a few decades when those of us who grew up on the NES are all old and gray, but not next generation and probably not the generation after that. It may be my crystal ball that turns out to be the one that's broken, but at least it makes boring-yet-plausible predictions that don't involve wholesale shifts in the status quo. A digital-only future isn't quite "flying car" territory (most people can barely drive land vehicles; giving them all aircraft seems like a bad idea), but it is more like "permanent off-world colonies," something that may happen eventually but not for a very, very long time, far longer than most people originally thought when the idea was first conceived.

I absolutely agree. Streaming will be a part (maybe even a big part) of the future, but it won´t be THE future as in there´s nothing else. Hell we don´t even know why Sony bought these patents and I think it is quite possibly not primarily gaming related.

Sony really seem to be serious about this streaming games business, huh...

You have to embrace the future or else you'll end up like Nintendo...

What? Richer?

so does this mean Sony is going to copy the UI of OnLive patents? that is why buying copyrights to prevent future sue by OnLive?

For Sony's sake, this cloud gaming thing better be worth it cause that's quite the amount of cash being invested there.

OnLive probably had some really awesome ideas patented and wouldn't let anyone else use them to prevent competition operating on equal terms. That included Gaikai and PSNow.

Now that Sony has purchased those patents, we're likely to see huge stability improvements over the next year for PSNow.

In short, I agree. More or less you summed up my opinions on the subject as well. As boring as it may be, I don't expect to see that radical of a shift in the status quo in the near future. Nonetheless it seems like a good investment for Sony to acquire those patents.

If it improves the current service I'm all for it.

If it's just used to keep out competition and patent troll. /sad panda

is ps now so popular and need more streaming servers? Probably Sony creates her own ''dat cloud'' or to improve psn because once again was down ''throuth the high traffic'' lol

Of course it's worth it. There are millions and millions of more people with good broadband than people with PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4 (combined). I find it hard to believe that some people STILL don't quite understand where this is going. I'm not saying YOU don't understand but generally speaking the response from both users and the industry is one of puzzlement. This is BIG.

The PS5 Exists.

Ofcourse it will be succesfull for Sony, who of us did not own an Onlive account?
