Forums - PC - AMD preparing to Hunt the Titan X

Honestly, I feel quite sad about the fact that Samsung is about to release 14nm SoC and we're still not even sure if this card is 20 or 28nm.

afaik all rumors point to Fiji (390/390X) being 28nm, as TSMCs 20nm process isn't reliable enough for gigantic chips like that and additionally Apple has booked most of their production capacities

Wait until 20nm cards in a couple of years, or worth investing?

if you can wait that long, then you should definitely wait

if you want an awesome system in the next few month however AMD could be a surprisingly good option

Well I'm conflicted. I don't know whether 4k gaming is worth it, or whether I should go for 1440p 120hz.

in my opinion the step from 1440p to 4k isn't a big visual change, but it needs a lot higher processsing power - for 1440p the 290X and the 980 are good enough to reliably push fps to 60+ especially once games use DX12 and Vulkan (still recommend a G-Synch or Adaptive/FreeSynch monitor as 120/144 fps probably won't happen in the forseeable), but the Titan X and 390X might not be enough to display games at 4k with all bells and whistles at reliably high framerates

I think these super high end cards are more interesting if you want to jump into VR where every bit of power is necessary, although that's a field dual GPU/dual graphics cards set-ups might really come into it's own in

I really hope those prices are a joke though. What happenned to new high end models being available starting between 200 and 300 bucks? I remember the hd58xx series, with the hd5850 being such an amazing deal at just over $200 that price hade to go up because of the huge demand.

AMD is hurting a lot, while Nvidia is in almost an Apple like position where they can charge whatever they want - both companies have no interest in offering high end GPUs at low prices

well, and the GM200 (Titan X, future Nvidia GPUs) and Fiji (390X/390) are really big chips that alone cost more than $200-300 per unit to R&D and produce

The 5850 wasn't the high end model and the 5870 was priced 399 bucks... and then the price went up due to high demand

4K gaming is too soon imo; you're better off going 1440p and pushing all post processing effects to the max instead and with better FPS at that.

^If that add is real, then I think AMD knows it will be top dog soon.  In fact I am going to do something that few do on VGchartz:  Make a PC prediction:

-390X will be 15-25% stronger than the Titan X, and therefore 5-10% stronger than even the soon to be released GTX 985 Ti.

-The 4GB version will launch between $600-$700, and the 8GB versions will be $800-$1000.

-There will be both AIO-Liquid cooling and Standard air-cooling options.  Obvious the AIO versions will be $50 more than their cheaper counterparts

-The card will launch before July, and it will be the strongest (Non-duel) GPU for around a year or even longer depending on how desperate Nvidia is to not have the weaker products.

Very exciting to see who "Wins" 28nm in performance this summer.  Thoughts?

GTX 985 Ti? wut

It's going to be whatever they call the reasonable version of the Titan X.  It will have half the VRAM and likely be clocked as high as they can clock it to try and compete with whatever monster AMD is about to unleash.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

LOL that ended 5 years ago with the GTX 260.  As usual you can thank Nvidia for jacking up prices.  It always goes like this:

1) Prices are fine

2) Nvidia gets this idea in their head that they are the Intel of GPU's, and so they some how think they can sell their next flagship for an exorbitant price.

3) As usual Nvidia underestimates AMD and so AMD launches some card that makes Nvidia look silly for more money than they would have because it is already a great deal compared to a $600 GTX 280 or a $1000 Titan.

you forgot

4) but consumers still flock to Nvidia in droves, because of the green teams persuasive PR team

Yes and no.  Nvidia will get more market share than they deserve, but idk AMD is getting better and better at PR.  If the 390X is the knock-out it looks like it could be AMD will take market share.
