I really hope those prices are a joke though. What happenned to new high end models being available starting between 200 and 300 bucks? I remember the hd58xx series, with the hd5850 being such an amazing deal at just over $200 that price hade to go up because of the huge demand.

LOL that ended 5 years ago with the GTX 260.  As usual you can thank Nvidia for jacking up prices.  It always goes like this:

1) Prices are fine

2) Nvidia gets this idea in their head that they are the Intel of GPU's, and so they some how think they can sell their next flagship for an exorbitant price.

3) As usual Nvidia underestimates AMD and so AMD launches some card that makes Nvidia look silly for more money than they would have because it is already a great deal compared to a $600 GTX 280 or a $1000 Titan.

you forgot

4) but consumers still flock to Nvidia in droves, because of the green teams persuasive PR team

Yes and no.  Nvidia will get more market share than they deserve, but idk AMD is getting better and better at PR.  If the 390X is the knock-out it looks like it could be AMD will take market share.
