Forums - Gaming - Famed developers who criminally are out of job in the industry

To me this sums up the state of gaming perfectly. Japan is becoming more and more irrelevant and the industry is moving towards Western oriented, often cinematic, hand holding games and less about stylized, skill based games. That's why studios like Platinum, games like Dragon's Dogma and certain indies that try to imitate the stuff from the good ole days are so valued these days.

This mindset is so annoying to me

A lot of the gaming industry was found and built on by amazing creative individuals, but when gaming grew, companies and corporations took over. This is possibly the reason why many Japanese devs have disappeared / been side lined.

We are now seeing it in the west to with Ken Levine, Tim Shaefer etc

If Sony is serious about a gaming renaissance, and MS want to play ball, they will empower these individuals to do what they do best.

It's a shame that veterans with experience and a portfolio are being ignored whilst corporates milking the industry are going from strength to strength

List of legendary devs who created some of the best classics in gaming who suddenly dropped off the radar and at the current time shockingly aren't working on anything major or have been relegated to small (mobile/digital) games.

1. Yu Suzuki aka Leonardo Da Vinci of Gaming hasn't been able to sell any of his ideas to publishers in the last 10 years. WTF

2. left open out of respect for Suzuki san cuz no one has been wronged as much as him

3. Yuji Naka of sonic hasn't made anything big since the 90s, works at Prope making small games

4. IGA of castleroid fame has no job

5. Itagaki, disappeared after DOA4. Currently working on Devils Third which was announced 5 years ago and still looks bad

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of people wrote off Itagaki because of his diehard attitude for Xbox (which is out of place in Japan).

Just off the top of my head: Witcher 2 and Skyrim had godawful gameplay and combat. Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma had muuuuuuch better gameplay.

2 games isn't enough to justify your cause. To say that western games nowadays aren't stylized, and hand hold is stupid.

Still better than 0 examples that justify your cause though. I gave you like examples of the 4 biggest recent rpgs, thats why I said "off the top off my head" it's your fault if you expected a compendium, pay attention. You can find many more examples if you bothered to search, like DmC vs DMC or any other western vs JPN hack n slash games.

Japanese gaming isnt dying as much as you think, if you see how many western games floped in recent times or western studios closed you get the impression japanese gaming grew bigger in the amount of games they are producing.
There are big giants who are coming to an end like capcom, konami and sega yet at the same time new talented studios popping up and caring the torch like fromsoftware, platinum and tango.

And in the end of the day i have never seen a japanese publishers go bankrupt, even snk is still around. Meanwhile look how many western publishhers closed down, acclaim, infrogames, thq, midway

Yeah thats impressive. I haven't heard of any JPN dev/publisher going bust in the last few years, like I was surprised there's still studios around who haven't had a major game for a decade, some just to have relegated to mobile gaming, while every few months there's bad news regarding Western dev houses.

That's not impressive at all. Taito, Sega, Hudson (Bomberman) are/were all publishers and they would've gone the way of Dodo if they were not acquired or merged with bigger companies.
That's just the company names I have off top of my head.

Yuji Naka shouldn't be on the list. He really needs to stop getting credit for creating Sonic.

He didn't necessarily "create" sonic but he programmed the first games which made sonic who he was. Can't make sonic speedy and spin dash wihtout programming.

Will Hideo Kojima be joining this list soon?
