Forums - Gaming - Famed developers who criminally are out of job in the industry

Only Yu Suzuki and Iga are true on your list. It takes a lot of goal-post moving to claim that Itagaki is "out of work" right now. Part of why Devil's Third got derailed was THQ's bankruptcy, but Nintendo saved it.

Yuji Naka shouldn't be on the list. He really needs to stop getting credit for creating Sonic.

He didn't necessarily "create" sonic but he programmed the first games which made sonic who he was. Can't make sonic speedy and spin dash wihtout programming.

Hirokazu Yasuhara was responsible for the gameplay and level design. Naoto Ohshima created Sonic's character design. That's why when they left and he was in charge we ended up with crap like Sonic 06.

I feel like there's a joke going on in this thread, but it seems to be going over my head - I hope.

To me this sums up the state of gaming perfectly. Japan is becoming more and more irrelevant and the industry is moving towards Western oriented, often cinematic, hand holding games and less about stylized, skill based games. That's why studios like Platinum, games like Dragon's Dogma and certain indies that try to imitate the stuff from the good ole days are so valued these days.

Wait, what? Western devs aren't affected?

Add Lord British (Richard Garriot), Warren Spector, John and Brenda Romero, Tom Hall, Jon Van Canegem, Will Wright, Peter Molyneux...

Lots of the biggest and best Game designers of the 80's, 90's and early 2000's are jobless or just heading a small Indie studio. That's also why they all jumped on the Kickstarter Bandwagon in 2012-2014, as even their big names don't mean anything to a bank if you need money

I was expecting Sakaguchi. I left dissapointed.

He still has a job, it just isn't a very good one...

He could have an awesome job if he would make a deal with SE to come back and work alongside everyone else on Main FF/Chrono games, or go to Sony exclusively and create a new RPG series.

He has such a creative mind, I don't understand why he just let himself fester away instead of going for the big ones.  LO and The Last Story had glimmers of greatness, but they weren't backed by better game designers...that and the audience wasn't there for either of the systems they were exclusive to.

Naka has a job. His new game is coming out on the Wii U and 3DS. Some Nights like thing with a guy flying. I forget what its called.

Lets be honest, he would have 0 chance to do anything new if he stayed on SEGA. I'm pretty sure he was laid off though. He was paid in gold.

But, generally the industry didnt value nor tried to keep its talents thinking it could do just as well without them. The truth is gaming is alot owrse than it was back then. These guys did have something special that was lost. A good showcase of that is squeenix. Its a sliver today of what it used to be. SEGA of course is another example.

This is a sad thread
